What is wrong with the Cleveland Indians?

The Indians quietly lept out of the cellar in the AL Central over the weekend by sweeping the Blue Jays. Mostly due to great starting pitching:

Fri. Aug. 8th- Newly acquired Anthony Reyes pitched a gem in his first outing with the Tribe. (6.1 innings with 1ER). In. St. Louis, Reyes pitched the first game of the '06 World Series. Since then, he apparently fell out of graces with the Cards and was optioned for the minors and tried to be converted to the bullpen. For whatever reason it didn't work. Hopefully a change in scenery will do him good with the Tribe. (Indians

Sat. Aug. 9th- Paul Byrd completed his 4th straight strong performance. On Saturday, Byrd pitched a complete game and gave up 2 ER.

Sun. Aug. 10th- Cliff Lee wins his 16th win.

He's the RUNAWAY AL Cy Young Award winner!

Bill and KCK, do you think K-Rod may get more consideration than Lee, simply because he's going to shatter an MLB record and he also plays on a better team? Like it or not, playing on a better team often is the deciding factor.

When roid-filled Eric Gagne won it with the Dodgers there was quite a bit of controversy as to whether or not it should go to a closer.

Would I like to see Frankie win it here? Sure! It would be a perfect capping off of what is (so far) the most amazing season any Angels fan has ever seen. However, I can think of no one more deserving of the award this season than Cliffy.

The Cy Young winner is different from the MVP , because it USUALLY goes to the best pitcher, irregardless of the teams record. I could see K-Rod getting serious consideration for MVP, because he plays on the best team, and a closer by definition is an everyday player.

Bill,

Then you REALLY open up a can of worms by giving the MVP to a pitcher when many will say that's what the Cy is for...it's for pitchers and therfore disqualifies a pitcher from getting the MVP.

Not to be a homer, but I agree.

Cliff, currently 16-2, is especially amazing considering the team he's on has been awful this year. Wins and losing teams don't usually go together.

On the other hand, what K-Rod is doing is fantastic, but being that he has 3 run leads going into the 9th quite often, his job is to finish the game unscathed and that is exactly what he's doing.

Two very different scenarios. Should be interesting how it turns out.

Right, and I ordinarily agree with that, but there's a few things that makes it different for me this year:

1. All things being equal I think the Cy Young should go to a starter. And Cliff Lee is having an unbelievable year.

2. I believe a closer CAN qualify for the MVP-IF he's having an extraordinary year (K-Rod)- because he's an everyday player.

3. One prerequisite I would have for an MVP: his team MUST qualify for the playoffs. Right now either Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton seem to be the odds on favorite to win the MVP. But unless the Rangers make a serious move at the wildcard, I don't think either should get it. If it were "Player of the Year" then fine, but NOT MVP.

If I had an MVP ballot and the season ended today, I would vote for either K-Rod or Carlos Quentin.

Carlos' is a WONDERFUL story this season. I've been following him and he is such a quiet leader who just produces day-in-day-out. I agree with your assessment and am concerned about the Sox should the Angels meet them in the playoffs.

You know if I had a vote it would be either Lee or K-Rod. K-Rod is fantastic but Lee is on a lousy team. I think Lee deserves it a little more because he's having an outstanding year on a lousy team whereas K-Rod is on a team that could win there division by 20 games. I just think Lee deserves it a little more.

Mets,
a little correction there. The Indians aren't "a lousy team", they're just having a bad year. There's definitely a distinction there.

That's a fair point. What I should say is that when you compare the two teams Lee is more deserving his team isn't as good as the Angels.

Can someone please refresh my memory in how trades work again towards the end of the MLB season?

The "trading deadline" was July 31st, but just yesterday I heard that Paul Byrd would probably be put up for trade offers and may be a highly sought after pitcher for a contender. How does this work? I thought the trade deadline already passed?

Byrd must clear waivers to be traded, and it goes in reverse order of record in American League first. In other words, let's say the Indians wanted to trade Byrd to the Yankees, Byrd would have to clear the teams that have a worse record than the Yankees before a deal could be reached by the two teams.

Wow. Great weekend of Baseball by the Tribe/Angels. Very competitive 3 game series. Did you get to see/watch any of it KCK?

Let me recap:

Fri. Aug 15th- Cliff Lee vs. Jered Weaver. Lee pitched a complete game, 2 run performance and earned his 17th win. Lee is now 17-2 with an ERA of 2.43. No pitcher has ever gone 16-2 in their first 19 games in Indians history. Lee is re-writing the record books. Lee also became only the sixth pitcher since 1970 to win 17 of his first 19 starts.

"That might be the best lineup I've ever faced," Lee said. "They are in first place for a reason."

Angels setup man, Jose Arrendondo actually looked mortal in giving up the go-ahead runs. Indians win 3-2.

Sat. Aug. 16th- Unusually sloppy defensive game by the Tribe. They had 4 errors in total. Lackey and Carmona both pitched relatively well. K-Rod tied his team record of 47 saves. Angels win 4-3.

Sun. Aug. 17th- J. Sowers vs. J. Saunders. After the first inning, Sowers calmed down to allow only 1 run the rest of the way. Also, this game was significant in that our "new" closer, Jenson Lewis earned a save in a pressure situation while facing the heart of the Angels lineup. Tribe wins 4-3 and they take the series rubber match against the Angels, 3-1.

Yes, I watched all three. I am NOT at all pleased with the way the Angels are playing right now. They should have swept the Tribe.

And on Saturday you got to see first hand what we call a Nervous Save by Frankie!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Gotta give some credit to the Tribe. Our pitching was great and our bats are starting to come alive finally. Victor, Pronk and Barfield are starting rehab assignments this week! Should get them back sometime in mid-September.

How about our 2nd Baseman Asdrubal Cabrera? I realize he's young, but the local radio crew were comparing his defensive skills to that of Robbie Alomar. And to think his natural position is at SS! Cabrera's from Venezuela (same as Omar) and grew up idolizing Vizquel. I would love to see Cabrera take over at short and move Jhonny Peralta somewhere else.

Frankie has quite the delivery doesn't he? That is one of the most awkward follow-through's I've ever seen. How is he prepared for a line drive shot up the middle? He's quite quirky to say the least.

Just in time for that stretch run to last place with the Tigers and Royals:D

I can honestly say that I cannot remember him getting hit like that, so I don't have answer for you, HD. That's alot of moving parts and when satrs to wear down, he will go fast.

This is a picture of Frankie following a pitch. After every pitch, it appears he's going to fall over!
