What can I do to adapt this LNB?

So we got the LNBF adapted to fit his dish. I aimed it at 95w and tuned it up as good as I could on the Chinese channels. I also checked positioning the LNBF by sliding it forward and backward until I got the strongest signal. I am reasonably confident that it’s as good as it’s gonna get.

So then I went in and checked RTV on Dad’s S9 and it was showing a 86% / 70% which I believe is a pretty darn good reading. He has always had trouble getting RTV, it’s been weak and goes out often. Unfortunately I didn’t check the signal strength before.

Another thing.. Before this, Dad was getting the PBS channels on 125w… They were a bit weak and sometimes they would drop out so they weren’t totally reliable. But they usually worked.

?Next up I THOUGHT I was loading a list of US satellites into the tuner. Apparently it was more than that, it overwrote the firmware with a different version. Much different. Now I may have to figure out how to change it back to what it was, the way it worked before was how my dad was used to it and he doesn’t like change. He also despises that remote control, he’s going blind, literally, and it’s very difficult for him to see the white on white buttons. It’s extremely annoying. I hate the S9 remote too. It’s HORRID! Whoever designed it deserves to be punched in the throat. HARD..

Anyway, once it overwrote the firmware and satellites list it rebooted and it was like brand new. I had to set up the USALS lat/lon stuff all over then select the ku satellites and start a scan.

I did a whole sky scan and then dumped the list to a thumb drive, plugged it into dad’s old XP laptop and try to edit the channels into something more user friendly.

As I was looking at and comparing the channels it found with published channels on Sathint.com I noticed that all the frequencies were waaaaaaaaaaay wrong. WUT???

I went back to the tuner and realized that it had defaulted to a universal LNB rather than the 10750 LO of the new S1PLL… Ooooopsy…

I figured that my best bet was to just reload the tuner like I had done earlier so that everything would reset to default then set it up all over again but this time be sure to also set the LO for EVERY satellite.

What sucks is there is an option to “Set USALS for ALL satellites” but there’s not option to “Set LNB LO for all satellites”.. How annoying ! And HOURS of time lost.

By now it was almost 5pm. I started a new scan of the whole sky with everything set properly and went home. My dad called me about fish and told me it had finished scanning.
I told him to press OK then EXIT a buncha times until it got out of the set up menus. Then he navigated through the massive list of like 600+ channels until he found LPBHD on SES-2 so he could watch his nature program.
I told him I would have to come back tomorrow to edit the channels into plain English and set up favorites lists for him. It’s sooooooo much easier to do that on the laptop than using the remote. Ugh!

So anyway, the biggest problem I have is that I can not at all find ANYTHING on 125w. NADA…

I found the Dish welcome slate on 121w and the SCOPUS NET channel on 123w. If I can find these channels it seems to me that I should also be able to find the stuff on 125w. I mean come on, 123 is a hair away from 125, right?

I found stuff on pretty much all the sats, it all seems to come in really well but nothing on 125.. What am I doing wrong? I used the tuner to aim at 125 then went to the dish and using my meter I tried to wiggle the dish side to side, up and down to find PBS World which is not S2, my meter won’t tune S2 or MPEG4 stuff at all so all I can do is search for PBS World. Or am I wrong? Is World now also S2?? It used to not be.

I put the tuner on 125 and set it for “Accurate Scan” and also tried the “Blind Scan” and still nothing.

I went in to the mode where you can scan individual frequencies and I tried to scan for the published PBS frequency of 12180/V/30000 and there was just nothing there.. :(

Is it just me? Or did PBS on 125 go bye bye? I could have sworn it was working on my dad’s tuner just yesterday. I’m so burned out that I can’t think anymore. One thing I did notice though is that the last time the stuff for PBS on AMC-21 was updated was 2010, 3 years ago.. Certainly something has changed since then? Yes no?
?
ALL DAY LONG my dad was sitting there asking me “What is that?”, “What does that say?”, “What does that do?”, “What are you doing now?”, “What channel is this?”, “What do those numbers mean?” and so on.. ALL. DAY. LONG..

I was trying to explain everything I was doing to my dad when half the time I had no idea. I was just pressing buttons and hoping for a result most of the time. I am not expert. I love my dad but playing 2,000 questions all day was a bit much…

Anyway, I’m desperate for advice on finding the mysterious missing PBS stuff. Dad never was able to get the Montana channels so those aren’t a real concern and the ones on SES-2 can mostly fill in for the ones on AMC-21 with the exception of PBS World (he’s lukewarm on World) and the OETA channels. OETA produces some unique stuff that he likes and he’s all into Oklahoma stuff anyway (I have children/grandchildren there)..
If he can’t get OETA anymore he’ll really be grouchy and I’ll be in the dog house until I can fix it.

?Thanks! :)

What are these things?
Those things are standard stainless steel pipe clamps and some pipes welded together to make multifeeds out of them.

The PBS stuff is still on 125W. It's all DVB-S2 now, but it's there. I use a 1 meter dish that's fixed on that satellite.

Oh no! Really? It’s ALL S2? I had been using my meter to tune in PBS World which was not S2..

Is there ANY non S2 stuff on 125 now? Or am I completely out of luck with my old school meter?

I really can not afford to buy a new S2 compatible meter.. :(

?ALL the lists of channels/frequencies for 125 / AMC-21 seem to be several years old. :(

Is there a current listing anywhere of what’s there?

I need just ONE, ANY, channel on 125 that’s compatible with my old non-S2, mpeg2 meter…

OUCH……

What about OKLA on 12112? It doesn’t say explicitly that it is S2. I assume it is but it’s not clear in the way they list it.
I’m grasping for straws here..

There’s also a few channels that are greyed out, I assume those are those part time feeds that just show the color bars and tone? Any of those operating on old school signals?

Well, that didn’t go so well..

I spent all day in the sun, burning up and cursing..

Here’s what’s happening.

I aimed the dish at 95w which is near true south from my dad’s house. After looking into it more this evening I see that 93.1 would be even closer to true south. I may have to try again but aim at this one instead.

So I aimed at 95 and I tuned in CCTV. It came in like gang busters! Crazy strong signal.. I tweaked it as best as I could using my fonky, old school meter. Then I tuned over to RTV on 83 and it was coming in crazy strong too. WOO HOO!
I checked 97 and hundreds of channels scanned in. Like a boss…

I head over to 125 and NADA… ZIP.. :(

So Wednesday night Dad watched PBS on SES-2. That got him through the night.

Thursday I went back and this time I took his tuner outside and took a little 7” TV.

I swung the dish over to 125 and then using the elevation adjustment I very slowly adjusted the dish elevation until I got a signal on 125. I scanned and found all the PBS channels.
I adjusted elevation only until I got a strong signal. Then I go back to 83 and I get no signal.

So I adjust elevation again until I get signal on 83 again. I go back to 125. No signal ! ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I go back and forth playing this game for like 45 minutes. Finally I got to where I was moving in the smallest increments possible, just like micrometers at a time and I FINALLY got a signal on both 83 and 125 at the same time.

BUT, both of the signals were weak and I could see they were fluctuating up and down on the OSD meter. Ugh…. Not cool.

I decided this would have to suffice for now because I was totally burned out, tired of the sun baking me and not being able to see the LCD screen in the sun. I was at the snapping point.

I take everything back inside and put it all back together and rescan the entire sky. It sees 83 through 125 but it’s weak and I’m not at all satisfied with it.
And then what was really weird was that it only scanned in about 200 channels on 97. There should have been over 300 channels. Also, 97 was weak.

I do not get it.. I can not figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’m sooooo frickin frustrated that I wanted to just smack it all with a hammer. Except it all belongs to my dad..
I’m an idiot for even introducing my dad to FTA. I’m in over my head and now I’m stuck supporting this pain in my *** nightmare.

IF I could find a factory made 1 meter (or bigger) plastic/fiberglass dish that is made from the get-go to be a motorized dish I would buy it with my own money to replace this frickin cobbled up junkpile he has just to be done with it.
I don’t want to buy one of those sheet metal dishes, not after that FLIMSY, POS WSI 6’ “Special" that rusted away and never even worked anyway.. Sheet metal dishes and the Gulf Coast don’t mix.

I love the quality of the Andrew dishes. I just wish they made a motorized ku dish of the same quality as their commercial fixed dishes.

Anyway.. Does anyone have any idea what I’m doing wrong? Or is this just a hopeless venture that’s never gonna work?

There's only 221 TV channels on Galaxy 19 (97) last time I blind-scanned, others are radio. I can't seem to get 125 locked in either, but I did see mention on one site that the Montana PBS channels on this sat is difficult to bring in.

Dee, you broke a cardinal rule of adjusting a dish to the Clark belt. You adjusted elevation after setting it on your Due South. A BIG No, No.

You move the whole motorized dish and motor with bracket east/West in very small increments. I usually forget this one too.

Oh shhhhhhhheeeeeesh! Smack my head!!!!

Obviously that tidbit of useful information never made it through to my poor little over taxed brain!!

I guess I need to look up some youtube videos on how to do this. I guess I never did learn the right way. Maybe now I know why I've never been able to get a ku motor system to work right.

Ooooooopsy!!!

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to determine which way your East & West Sats are off - is Dish is too High or too Low.
- make notes: East is too _______. West is too _________.
Adjust the Azimuth until both East & West sats need the same correction - High or Low.
Then go back to the TS Sat and adjust declination - recheck East and West Sats for improvement.

As soon as we get another cool front I plan to go back and try this..
It’s just too hot to go spend another few hours out there again.
There is no shade at all where my dad’s dish is.

Must be nice to be too hot in October. I'm glad its still in the 60's here at this time of year and not the normal 40's.

It’s miserable to be too hot in October. We only get about two weeks worth of cool-ish weather in February.. Some people even whine about it and wear coats. I guess they were raised in Death Valley or something.

It never, NEVER gets cold here. I haven’t felt a need to wear a coat here in a very long time.

Last January we went to spend time with my son, his wife and my granddaughter in Yukon, Oklahoma. It was 18 degrees and I was wearing shorts, a light short sleeve top and was barefoot most of the time.
I brought a coat because my dad and my son told me it would be cold. I guess they were joking with me. I never unpacked the coat at all.

When it’s 40 degrees outside and the wind is out of the north, I open every door and window in my house from sunrise to sunset.

Only when it gets into the mid 30’s (which is rare) do I close the doors and windows though I do not use a heater during this time of year that some people call “winter”..

If it were not for the fact that I have family here and that I have to stay here because of my dad getting up in his years, I would move as far north or as far south as humanly possible.

When I die I want my ashes spread over Antarctica.. (Which I understand it melting away at a crazy pace!)

Guys,

I need to buy a new meter and I need advice. Should I start a new thread about that or just ask it in this thread?

?Thanks!

I've never depended on a meter to aim any of my dishes, and I've put up quite a few over 30 years. Use a receiver and small tv or monitor at the dish. The MicroHD, if you push the Yellow "Signal" button at the top, will even emulate BER by showing how stable the levels are. You want them as stable and level as possible, not fluctuating at all if possible. IMO none of the present meters are worth buying unless you are willing to spend upwards of $500 or so. That's out of my budget for doing this stuff, no matter how much I like watching tv.
