I also asked the guy last week how they hook it up for more than one receiver

each apartment has one cable line and they just put a splitter in the apartment for the extra receivers

That amp is for the dish itself to power the entire building, not just your apartment. A polarity locker may also help the situation. But i know itd be hard for you to get a tech to actually figure that out, or understand that you know what a creature is lol.

Basically that amps up the signal from the dish, then you should have a series of swm32s im not exactly sure what your setup is, but its obviously not done efficiently. How many units are in your building, and how many per floor?

sorry but there are a few of those that I've seen. There is one of those per lock box (and there are 6 of them....3 in one spot and 3 about 200 feet away). There is also one I can see outside of those boxes

I agree. Again this "tech" thought the 1st time it was my cabling in the apartment

I can assure you its not done efficiently. There are 93 apartments on 3 floors (so 31 per floor) + the community room which has a "demo" account (as in it can get all channels but PPV...They have a TV14 lock on it so no porn or HBO ;)

Here is what I know (in bold)....the other is speculation
5 lines come from the roof down into the basement...4 from a slimline 5 and one from 95W.....this goes into a locked box
assuming there is a splitter and amp in there....not a SWM splitter but like below in the 1st pic....because there are TEN cables that come out from another spot in that box
5 cables run right by the 3 locked boxes....where there are three MORE splitters there (see 2nd pic...bottom right corner)....the other 5 wires run down the garage and around the corner where the other cable drop box is....there are 3 locked boxes there too
each splitter has 3 cables coming from that into each of the lock boxes (as seen in pic 3)

now I assume in the 3 boxes there is the same thing
5 lines into the amplifier as posted above (post 57) and the cables then go into that little color box thingy
out of those it goes to 8 SWM8's (the box type)

They can hook up 2 apartments per SWM8....except mine ;)
Those cables run to a cabinet right by those that was/is used for Comcast. Cable was free until last year when they switched. Each apartment has one outlet. It looks like a cluster (see 4th pic). There are 2 of these....the one here is mine which has (written on the front) 115-131, 215-231 and 315-331. The other box has 1-14 obviously.
They tap into that to go to the apartment
If you have more than one receiver they put a SWM splitter in the apartment
If you want cable internet and satellite they put a diplexer there (see bottom right corner of the picture....). I assume that is for HD. They use Holland STVC diplexers for folks with SD

where the box for 101-114 is (and 201-214 and 301-314) there is a amp there before it goes to those splitters again (to split to each box)

The guy put an amp on my line like in the last picture
so in a nutshell my line goes from the roof down 5 floors (well roof) to a amp/splitter to ANOTHER splitter to another amp to that "color box" to a SWM8 to the other box back up 4 floors to my apartment....and you wonder why they say I may have power drops? ;)

so 8 SWM8 per box times 6 boxes is 48 SWM8's...2 lines per SWM thats a max of 96 apartments that can be hooked up. 93 + community room is 94 so there is enough slots available

Well ill run it by my sup tomorrow, but im fairly posotive the ka/ku is supposed to be capped at 64 tuners with amps. Sounds like you should have two dishes, but im also not 100%

I do know that amp on your line is passive, and the powered one works alot better.

so they were out again yesterday...but not for me
They were on the roof supposedly fixing the dish because "some of the HD channels arent working"....yet for me everything looked fine
Last night come home and no ODDS on 119 or 103's......and its in the whole building. So they screwed up something that was working fine. The evens show in the 90's

So they'll be out tomorrow to fix it. Heck I know the installer guy on a 1st name basis so it outta be interesting :)
(really the only channels I'm missing are FX and ESPNU)

oh and the other day I looked at the setup (the one around the corner) and good lord...using pics above
they switched from a 5 port amp (switch in 5th pic) to FIVE of the ones in the 6th pic.....seriously?
Then yesterday they put a new amp in but they dont have the power hooked up to it??

so they come today at 10:00...there is a knock on my door. no phone call no nothing
I open the door and the guy says "so you're having issues with the satellite?"
my response "yeah about 1/2 the building is"
He claims no one else is having issues.

He says it was a blown amplifier......well they only have 15 on the setup so god knows which one it was.

Well just an update...and more pics

So last week I'm watching TV and BOOM...searching for signal 771...dammit
0's on all evens on 99/101/103 so I'm pissed
storm downstairs into the garage and see the guy working on the main box....I say "oh so thats why I lost 1/2 my channels including all locals" (my locals are on 99s 16 and 101 TP20). Yup he noticed one of the legs on the amp is dropping signal power all the time.....goes from 95 to 60 back to 95 and so on. SO he's gonna switch the amp. Previously (post 64) I never saw what was in there....but now I did. There is a amp on the 5 lines from the roof...then ANOTHER amp right after it. (which was bad) then it goes to 5 splitters and then goes on to the other boxes as posted again in post 64
http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads...ing-back-quot-home-quot?p=3164865#post3164865

So he fixes that and then has to go to the other box to check it out there. Ok no biggie go upstairs and everything is fine. But next morning I get home and see one of the 3 locked boxes unlocked and the panel laying below it. So I HAD to go get my camera and take pics ;)

There are 6 of these cabinets and I assume these are all the same.
1st pic is a wide shot
2nd is the splitter used to power each of the SWM8's
3rd is a SWM8...there are 8 in the box
4th are the SWM splitters that go to the SWM8's...at least they have it color coordinated
5th is the amp....I dont get how its powered if there is nothing hooked to the power port
6th is a cleaner "wide angle view"
7th is below the SWM8...2 cables out...one to each apartment except for mine....the other cable has the end off and in the main box it says "GENIE"

so they are running a max of 96 apartments on this setup (48 SWM8's times 2 outputs per)

And you wonder why I have issues here with my setup??? ;)

If you look at the amp,the output is also DC in,so wherever the output is going the power is coming back from that.At least that's my story and I'm sticken to it! :D

I wonder if there is a "system" in there like hotels have?

Where they have one turner per channel and when you change the channel, it changes to that tuner. I'm guessing it could be possible!

They had that setup at the college I went to during my freshman year. The on campus apartments had "DirecTV" when all they did was plug the coax to their TV and use the TV's tuner, while the dorms had Charter with locals from both DMAs within 60 miles from the college.

sweet
All the RSN's are still there (628-699)...the other sports channels in the sports pack are no longer there.
Still have blackouts but its cool to have most of the sports pack without paying for the sports pack :)
(must have to do with the bulk package I am on)

well that was a good run.
Watching a college hockey game on CBSSN tonight and about 1/2 way thru got a popup of "not subscribed" with a 721 message.....hmmmm
switched to 3 or 4 RSN's that had non pro sports programming...same thing.....hmmm
switched to 668 & 669-1 (my local RSN's) and they work

So my 1 year "free ride" of the RSN pack is done. Weird that it just zapped around 6:50 tonight
