I think they understand that people don't need a national channel to tell them the weather anymore. So many people just check the weather on their computer or smartphone now. That way you get an up to the minute report of the exact area you want to know about without waiting and hoping they mention it. I'm sure the ratings for pure weather have been declining for TWC for years so it makes sense that they would branch out.

Even the people who don't use the internet can get a much more relevant forecast by watching their local news than a national weather channel.

That why I said that to maybe they will start doing weather again and get back to what it is supposed to be weather!! :)

Doubt it... I can already see "Introducing StormTV -- a new channel dedicated to today's active and adventurous lifestyle. Featuring such acclaimed series as 'Storm Chasers', 'Epic Conditions' plus the entire run of 'Survivor' from the first exciting episode! StormTV is a fresh take on TV for a new generation of thrill seekers and active viewers in the prime of their life. We feel that our new name and commitment to exciting and thrilling programming reflects on what made The Weather Channel unique, and continues that mission for today's modern, connected society."

I give it 2 years max as "The Weather Channel"... it will become "TWC" then something new. Gospel Music Channel is now "Pivot", G4 is now "Esquire" and numerous others.

right now on TWC...coast guard Alaska
right now on WXNation....weather reports especially about the possible ice storm in the east :)

TWC showing actual weather is kinda like MTV (does it still exist?) got to a point that it never showed music videos :)

now please remove the worthless TWC from my package so that my monthly bill doesn't support them.

If Directv could ever lose a contract dispute and hope they would act like Charlie.......TWC would be it:)

that can be arranged, but you'll lose CNBC, USA, Syfy, Bravo, Esquire Network, msnbc and your local NBC station if it's an O&O among others. ;)

Weather Channel actually does weather sometimes (they did the other evening when I noticed there was weather instead of docu-junk). They just give everything a lame name nowdays. I think it was Winter Storm Cleon and Winter Storm Deion. I suppose the next major winter storms will be called Freon, Gideon, Hoda, Ian, Jeema, Keon, Leon, etc. ;)

I still have to get my weather porn from Radarscope iphone app, the NWS and various university weather labs that make high res and dual-pol radar, charts and maps and info available to more than just students taking courses. All that because Weather Channel is pretty dumbed down weather for a weather channel. You'd think they could show upper level air charts at various altitudes, surface plots, high res radar (their radar looks so old-school resolution to me) and even dual pol radar. If I can read a lot of those products, it shouldn't be complicated for "talent" to describe and analyze those on-air for viewers to get a better understanding of the weather.

Weather Nation? Huh? Are they serious?

DirecTV is apparently "serious."

This sounds like a cheap, unnecessary addition. Like that b.s. DogTV. Perhaps DirecTV will be getting paid to carry Weather Nation.

Who is in charge of determining programming additions at DirecTV? There are still a hell of a lot of high definition programmers we subscribers should be able to access from DirecTV.

In the HD arms race, we get channels added which few of us want, and which drive up the overall cost to DTV, and then are passed along to us. :( All in the name of winning the marketing game.

why? Because they actually show WEATHER forecasts on it? Isnt that what WEATHER Nation should be?

I'd rather someone get the forecasts *CORRECT* vs. having pretty graphics and get it wrong (our local forecasting seems to invest much more heavily in the latter)

Now if they are ugly *and* wrong.. ok, give 'em hell :)

check out the weather channel's new graphic maps and compare them to weathernation's then let me know what you think ? The white background that the weather channel has now is awful. OLD SCHOOL
