VOOM looks better this morning

Any rumor on hd pack price increase? If they raise it too much they will be out of line of cable and D. My local cable includes the HD channels with the HD box rental, total cost is $4 more than the SD box.

I would love to have the standard def sat channels in hd lite

I would love to have the SD channels in DVD quality 480i, with bitrates around 5-6 mbs. That would be GREAT on the movie channels & Sci-Fi.

As to HD prices, if Dish would offer the 15 VOOM channels, the present HD Pak with ESPN2, Universal, Starz, Cinemax HD, and a couple more HD channels, all in 1920x1080, for $25 a month, I'd be glad to pay for it.

What's the point of subscribing to the SD premiums? I think a lot of people here could lower their bills a lot by dropping the everything packs and just subbing to HBO and Showtime.

I have AEP and am thinking about doing this, but I think I'd only save about $8/month, once I add in the $5/month DVR fee.

But as I'm watching less and less of the SD movie channels, it is tempting.

Just ran a price comparison.

AEP is $82/month.

AT180 + HBO + SHO + DVR fee = $84/month. So dropping Cinemax and Starz would result in a price increase for me.

If I would drop down to AT120 then the price would be:
AT120 + HBO + SHO + DVR fee = $74/month.

So this would save me $8 a month over the AEP, but I would lose Starz, Cinemax, Encore, ESPNU, several Discovery channels and more. Maybe 30-40 some channels in all.

So as long as one desires to get HBO and SHO in HD and has a DVR, then the AEP is probably a good deal for them.

5 out of my 6 receivers are DVR's. This is why I stick with the AEP. I can't even remember the last time I watched something on one of the premium channels.

It's cheeper for me to keep AEP then get rid of the premiums because of the DVR fees. :(

I wish that Dish would add the Cinemax, Starz in hd as well. I would record all of my movies form the hd versions of those as well as the Hd version of Hbo and Showtime. I always look for the movie to be on the hd channels before I will record it.

You and I both know HBO and the other movie channels wouldn't allow that. Personally I would prefer Dish pay TCM to set up an HD version of it's channel to Universal considering all the prime old movies they air.
Seriously though I will say Starz HD would make me seriously consider getting it just so I might be able to see Anime in HD for crying out loud.
I would pay an easy $20 for HD with VOOM as long as all were in their native broadcast format.
To the person talking about FOX OTA HD personally I think the pic looks like CRAP compared to a program I've seen on PBS and I've seen both "House MD" AND "Prison Break" on FOX. Honestly I think because DirecTV presents it we get some rez loss in the picture. If I'm wrong correct me and post the bitrate but somehow I get the feeling I'm right or maybe it's only on those two shows.

Tom with that kind of lineup in true 1920x1080i, I would be willing to pay 50$ a month ;)

the movie channels can only be in their separate movie paks though, what a shame that is

Exactly what wouldn't HBO allow? Are you referring to the $25/month figure? I'm assuming that one would have to be subscribing to HBO/SHO/etc in their SD package to get those channels in the HD package, which is the current Dish policy.

So if one is only sub'ing to the AT120 package, then even if you bought into the $25 HD pack, as described above, you would not get HBO, SHO, Cinemax, or Starz in HD. You'd have to have the AEP to get all of those channels.

It would be interesting if Dish could offer these premium channels without their SD counterparts, for say $15 a month. You would only get their primary channels (instead of 6, 7, or 8 movie channels from each service) for this fee. As AEP is only $29 more a month than AT180, and this includes DVR fees, the attractiveness of the HD premiums wouldn't make much sense to many subscribers if it were as high as $25/month. It might still be attractive to an AT60 sub, or someone subbing only to HD channels.

BTW, does Dish require an AT60 sub for someone getting HD or can you sub to just the HD Pack and VOOM?

You're paying for HBO/Sho content, I doubt they save anything by you not taking the extra SD channels. It doesn't really have anything to do with the hd pack since you can get the hd versions without subscribing to the hd pack. (as long as you own)

I for one do not suscribe to any movie pack -- period. I have over 250 DVD's and my Denon upconverts 480p to 720p or 1080i. While upconversion is not better than the real thing it is significantly better than the downrezed 480i E* an D* is showing.

I am one of those customer's that if HBO, Showtime, Starz & Cinemax would allow their HD channel (s) to be broadcast in HD for say $2 per channel I would gladly pay the fee (providing full rez). This would add $10 to $14 to my bill but I would gladly pay. With 5 more VOOM channels and possibly the rest of VOOM in March, along with UniversalHD there will be plenty of HD-movie channels to watch in the coming year. I hope there will be alot of happy campers around here come April. :)

Ehhh I still want HD TCM and would pay EXTRA for it even considering it's not nearly as bad as VOOM when it comes to repeats I'm sure. Yeah I know it's not out yet but I can dream. With the $2 a channel bit dream on. With how much "Rome" probably cost even with the BBC sharing it if I were HBO I wouldn't let you get away with paying that low a fee, Showtime and Starz you may be able to swing that for a little lower cost but HBO no.
Also with your Denon have you compared it to the Oppodigital player and if so how does it stack up?

DVR 510 use in RV

Will new HD locals be available for Puerto Rico also?
