The world's first HD DVD recorder hits stores in Japan

RD-A1 integrates a 1-terabyte (TB) Hard Drive which allows archiving of 130 hours of HD video! Not exactly a mass-market product, this 33-pound monster retails for 398,000 Yen, which is $3437, though conversion to US dollars doesn't mean much as this product is only intended for Japan, the way it stands.

Here are some specs and features:

Recordable media:
HD DVD-R (HDVR mode),
HD DVD-R DL (HDVR mode),
DVD-R (Video mode; VR mode), for General/1X-16X SPEED (recording speed 8X),
DVD-R DL (Video mode; VR mode), for General/4X SPEED (recording speed 4X),
DVD-RAM (VR mode), 2X-5X SPEED (Applied cartridges), (recording speed 2X),
DVD-RW (Video mode; VR mode), 1X-6X SPEED (recording speed 4X)

  • Records digital broadcasts (terrestrial and satellite) to hard drive and HD DVD-R
  • 1080p output over HDMI
  • Up-conversion of standard DVD to 1080p

geez...

Must be more Muillionaires in Japan than I thought....What would they record?

I figure it will take a few years for some NEW titles to come out in HD format to even make it worth it to get a Player.

Anything I bought, I would not buy again in HD (Again, the PQ on my upconverting Pioneer Elite 59i is superb...for $1000 it had better be!)...nor is there anything "new" on the Starz,HBO,Sho HD channels to record, assuming that you can. (My BUD w 4dtv and HDD200 also is superb in HD)

What do you do with it at this point in time??

Not enough HD to record on it? Are you kidding?!! Boy, I wish I had a terabyte hard drive in my DVR!
Every week there are probably a dozen of interesting movies or programs that I miss or don't have time to watch and wish I could archive some of them for later viewing. But there is never enough space on my 622 DVR. It's always such a pain when I have to delete my favorite movies from the DVR to make room for newer ones!

Even 1TB fills up quickly. Ive got about 1+.25+.3+.25+.25+.5 = 2.55 TB dedicated to storage for HD now and its filling FAST. I dont think we really need anything more than the freakin HD DVD recording drive to put in our PC's not this ultra expensive abortion. A simple PC drive would let me author to HD DVD and reclaim storage space I already own.
