100 linear HD channels on cable in New York
Friday, April 4 2008, 14:22 BST

By James Welsh, International Editor

Time Warner Cable is to carry 100 linear HD channels in New York, it was confirmed today.

The cable operator, which has positioned itself as "the home of free HD", will carry 50 HD channels starting on April 30, and plans to reach its target of 100 linear services by the end of the year.

Among the HD channels to be made available to all digital cable customers at the end of this month are Animal Planet, CNN, Hallmark Movie Channel, and ESPN. Additional sports and movie services in HD will be made available at no extra cost to subscribers taking the relevant package.

Time Warner has also announced plans to roll-out "enhanced HD" services such as "Start Over", a feature already available on some standard definition channels that allows viewers to start watching a programme already in progress from the beginning.

"By delivering the most HD choices and Enhanced HD for free to its Digital Cable customers, Time Warner Cable reaffirms our position as the preeminent multimedia provider in New York City," said Howard Szarfarc, executive vice president of the cable operator's New York City operations. "Our customers can watch what they want, when they want, in HD... for free."

Other US cable operators are adopting new technologies such as switched video, which allocates bandwidth on demand to resolve capacity issues, and the more efficient MPEG-4 compression codec, to accelerate rollout of high definition services

True, because we all know that there's virtually no way Dish would add 100 national channels by year's end... :)

Seriously though, congrats to the Time Warner viewers in New York!!!

How are they doing it?

Are they doing 3 HD channels per analog channel or 2?

Whats the compression?

It would really depend on the channel and how much action it has. You can do many more if your watching paint dry.. But a sports game you will put 1 maybe a second that is only paint drying.

My fiancee got this in her email this morning.....the channels are live now!

Over the next year in an area-by-area rollout, Time Warner Cable of NY/NJ will launch “Enhanced HDTV” which includes the cable-exclusive Start Over® service for standard and high definition programs. Start Over® is a service that allows customers to start a program over during its allotted time slot without the need for a DVR. Customers with HD set-tops will be able to “Start Over” more than 13,000 standard definition and 1,500 HD choices a month with the click of a button at no additional charge. By augmenting its HD content offerings with Enhanced HD features, Time Warner Cable offers a combination of HD content and features unparalleled by any competing video or internet provider. Channel locations will be available on our website at the end of this month. Visit timewarnercable.com/nynj.
“By delivering the most HD choices and Enhanced HD for free to its Digital Cable customers, Time Warner Cable reaffirms our position as the preeminent multimedia provider in New York City,” stated Howard Szarfarc, Executive Vice President for the company’s New York City region. “The added capacity for HD channels and content didn’t require significant upgrade expenditures or labor costs, and reflects the robust and flexible nature of our existing advanced fiber network.”
“Unlike with DIRECTV®, DISH® and some telecommunications companies which charge extra for these HD services, our customers can watch what they want, when they want, in HD…for free,” added Szarfarc. Current digital customers can upgrade to an HD set-top at no additional cost. With the vast majority of our HD channels included free with digital service, Time Warner Cable offers the easiest transition to and best value in HD of any provider today.

I went to timewarnercable.com/nynj
and it didn't say anything about any 50 HD channels.

Just the same ones that we get here in Western NY.

FIOS is coming here soon. TW will have decent competition (other than the dish guys...)

Well its about a month after since the last reply and still on their website, they do not show the addition of these new HD channels. Does anyone know when we will get this or if it is there but they just have not update their website?

yeah timewarner csr here told me that, they were going to add 15 more hd channels by the end of the year, thats why i stuck with dtv :)
