Well it's day two without the Weather Channel and so far my quality of life has held up just fine. And my hands aren't shaking and I show no withdrawal symptoms. So far so good. LOL.

on cable, weather channel was good, with locals on the 8s
on sat, not the same
add in all the 'shows' they have started the past few years, I only watch when hurricanes are coming now

I think they only have that analog VC2 feed due to the old Weather Stars still in use.

Also UHF-TV Inc. is a low-powered television broadcaster which relays stations to people in the Willmar, Minnesota area. Has the Weather channel on OTA tv.

yes they do. Being from Minnesota I've seen the Selective TV one in action at a local store. The SelectiveTV one has a good variety. Years ago it use to have unscrambled cable channels on it. They dropped that a few years ago mainly due to the expense but they still have Weather, MSNBC, C-Span, BizTV, AMGTV, RuralTV (use to have RFDTV too until they scrambled), Pentagon, Reelz along with all the Minneapols stations.

Here is a list they had back in 05. Sorry to get off topic a little bit ;)

The STL area had that channel on NBC subchannel 5-2. I always wondered why a NBC affiliate would broadcast a competitor to the WX Chan. Someone got the message a few months ago and it's now gone :-( . Most of the females meteorologists were uhh, well, let's just say they blocked more of the middle map than the guys.

Because the station is not owned by NBC. Here in Minneapolis WeatherNation is a subchannel which we figured since the guy who owns Weathernation (Paul Douglas) was the weatherguy at KARE (NBC) for many years. Our NBC is owned by Gannett (as is yous)
Gannett NBC stations with Weathernation include Mpls, Denver, Atlanta, Buffalo, Mobile

The NBC Owned and Operated stations (like NY, LA, Chicago, Philly, etc) have CoziTV as their subchannel

same here. Oh wait I watched WeatherNation before so nothing really changed

From 1988-2001 The Weather Channel was one of the most profitable cable channels out there by percentage. Low expenses, with good return on investment. The channel was held by a private company so the numbers did not have to be released. However the info I have shows it was turning 50% profit for nearly two decades. In 1999, the only year I actually have hard numbers for, TWC had a gross revenue of nearly a quarter billion dollars against expenses of just over 100 million.
The channel was still profitable, though the trend was WAY down in 2007. What was worse was that the trend was showing no signs of reversing. From what I know, Landmark decided to cash in and sell since the channel was no longer making as much money as it was. TWC went on the market and sold for 3½ BILLION dollars (including the web site which is a gigantic revenue source). Many analysts say this means the entity was still earning close to $150 million dollars in net profits a year.

Thank you for that information. Now I wonder where I got the idea they weren't making money.

Just get a Roku and watch Weather Nation. I don't know when I last watched the Weather Channel since they show who knows what all lol.
Disregarding the "reality TV" aspect of TWC, on my Roku, Weather Nation is no comparison to TWC. It is simply a static slate - no live people, etc, etc. Is there a different version out there ?

works fine here on my Roku.
I brought up the app
it asked me for my location...entered my city
boom a screen came up with local conditions and a PIP was the WN program
move over to the program and hit OK and it loads full screen

Maybe DirecTV can force Comcast to create weather channel classic

Ouch... only 20?

Again all the retailers I have talked to have told me they have not received a single call about it.

DirecTV, the second biggest pay-TV operator after Comcast Corp., is seeking to reduce the fees it pays to carry the Weather Channel by more than 20%, according to a person familiar with the situation. The satellite-TV service says increasing use of mobile apps has reduced the value of the TV channel.

A DirecTV spokesman said there had been "ongoing discussions among high-level executives throughout the weekend, yesterday and today." The spokesman added that DirecTV had lost only 20 subscribers since the blackout. DirecTV has more than 20 million subscribers in the U.S.
