The next 2 universities being looked at for taking gifts/money: The U and Alabama!

So what's the worst that can happen here, cancel seasons?

Ask SMU. They were the last school to receive a "death penalty". What The U has been accused of is worse though. Here was SMU's penalties.....

-The 1987 season was canceled; only conditioning drills (without pads) would be permitted until the spring of 1988.

-All home games in 1988 were canceled. SMU was allowed to play their seven regularly scheduled away games so that other institutions would not be financially affected. The university would ultimately choose not to do so.

-The team's existing probation was extended to 1990. Its existing ban from bowl games and live television was extended to 1989.

-SMU lost 55 new scholarship positions over 4 years.

-The team was allowed to hire only five full-time assistant coaches, instead of the typical nine.

-No off-campus recruiting would be permitted until August 1988, and no paid visits could be made to campus by would-be recruits until the start of the 1988–89 school year.

In other words, buckle up Miami. This is only the tipping point......

SMH......

Ponzi schemes, escorts, strippers, sex parties, corrupt boosters, lump sum cash payments, etc. etc. And we haven't even heard the start of it!!! WOW MIAMI IS DIRTY!!!!!!!!!!

Because the University had no knowledge of what was going on, and they did not withhold information or lie? Get it yet?
The coaching staff is the university. They are paid by and represent the school.

Otherwise any school could cheat as much as they want, and just blame it on the coach, who when caught can leave with a golden parachute and a *wink wink* from the school, as the school gets little to no punishment.

Glad you are enjoying the show. Players were not involved in the ponzi scheme. IF you are gonna make fun of the situation, at least get it right.

It's amazing how this went on for so long. You'd think that the NCAA would have started investigating this thing years ago and tried to curtail it early on.

The problem is the university had plenty of chance to investigate...and for some reason, be it scared or what have you, they just didn't. This guy did it in the open for all to see. This why I am so upset with the coaching staff...ESPECIALLY that fraud Randy Shannon. It's one thing to have stuff secretly happen behind the schools/coaching staffs back.... it's another to have it blatantly have it out there in the open. Sooner or later, where they want it or not...some kind of NFL minor league system will come out of this because there is NOTHING the NCAA can do to stop this. The horse is out of the barn.

Well, regardless of what happens going forward, Ohio State has already received a lot more than 'little to no punishment'.

Didn't sound like there was much winking going on at the hearing on Friday. Sounded like the school tried to completely distance themselves from Tressel.

From the ESPN article Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro says he provided benefits to Miami athletes - ESPN

"Shapiro said he paid for 39 different players to receive sex from prostitutes. He also claimed to have offered a $5,000 bounty to any player who could knock Florida State quarterback Chris Rix out of a game; gave players access to his multimillion-dollar home and yacht; and alleges he bought rims for Hester's sport-utility vehicle."

I think that bounty to hurt a kid is the dirtiest part. Its not really part of the illegal recruiting going on but it's just flat out disgusting. Miami has to be right up there with anyone as the dirtiest sports program in the country.

Totally agree. As sleazy as this guys sounds...that's REALLY sleazy. Jeesh.

Whatever happened to that fine? What about his resignation turning into a retirement? Things that make you go hmm...

And exactly what punishment has Ohio St. gotten? Their self-imposed probation with no penalities?

My point is, any school can play the excuse, that it was only (insert designated fall guy) to blame and use that to escape punishment.
The head coach isn't just another staff member either, afterall he is the head coach.

Well, at the absolute minimum, OSU had to jettison Tressel, one of the best college football coaches on the planet. Ten win season and victories over Michigan became as certain as the sunrise, and it looked like we were hopefully going to enjoy that for a couple more decades. Now that's all gone.

Yes, OSU will sooner or later wind up with a big-time coach like Meyer, Stoops or Gruden. Nice names, but we would have liked to have kept Tressel.

Caoches come and go, not exactly a punishment.

Saban leaving didn't exactly kill LSU's chances of getting another BCS title.

I agree, and as I said chances are OSU will wind up with a big time coach anyway. But this is still a huge loss for the program.

I would say if the school had heard the allegations and did nothing, they are toast. If the coach heard the allegations and did nothing or worse covered it up, very bad. From what little I know and have read, I think the U will be the second school to get the death penalty. This of course will have financial ramifications on the entire school. Very sad.

In deference to Ramy I am not letting you pull me into a bickering match on this one. I said what I feel. If you have a different opinion, you are entitled to it.

Sandra

Not laughing at you or anything you said, I am laughing at the fact that this has morphed into an Ohio State thread...THAT is funny!

Are you from the south?
