THE DUST BOWL

Another Ken Burns Documentary.... I was going to type masterpiece, but Burns has had a few stinkers. we'll all see if "The Dust Bowl" is as good as I expect it to be.

Two hours melted away as I watch this film. Astonishing. This is something I'd read about since I was in grade school yet now I find I knew nothing of the scale of the disaster. Looking forward to tomorrow's installment.

Same here, I had just watched the part where the Man described loosing his little Sister and how it still affected him years later when I posted earlier... I've heard stories about them trying to feed their cattle passed down from that generation.

The Dust Bowl is the reason most of my cousins live in California and up to the Pacific NW now. Most of my grandparents siblings migrated west. They say if not for the advancements in land preservation, Oklahoma would be in another Dust bowl now. Half of the state has crossed into extreme drought conditions with rainfall nearing 20 inches below normal for the last 2 years. Many ranchers have been selling off their cattle due to the lack of grass and hay the past few months. It's going to cost a fortune to feed them grain throughout winter, with the poor hay harvests. This is the first time that I can remember Cities are ordering mandatory water rationing during the fall and into winter. We had a small dust storm that blew up a few weeks ago, that was miserable. It's just impossible to fathom just how bad it was back then.

When I was in the second grade we moved to Oregon then California before moving back within a year, the only friendly people in Oregon back then (64 - 65) were those that had came from the Dust Bowl ... It's dry here, we got a little rain yesterday, first in 2 months but there will be no water for the farmers this year if it is not a wet winter which it is looking like it won't be. The reservoirs are dry.

No kidding. Our city water supply is at 42% after 2 years of drought and water rationing. Next year is not going to be pleasant unless we get some water to refill the lakes. Even if we had the strictest water rationing the evaporation will eventually get us.
