State of Texas increasing taxes on satellite?????

Is this thread really about 70 cents a month? That is $8.40 per YEAR. Or 2.3 cents per DAY. I have much bigger things in life to worry about than this. Give me a break.
No it is not about 70 cents because the amount changes with your bill. It is really the question of where did the authorization come from, 2012 is an off year for the Texas Legislature it dosen't meet again until 2013?

Dish recently added $1 a month to everyone in Washington state to cover the "cost of doing business in the state" whatever that means. Sounds like that extra dollar goes to Dish not the state. We pay sales tax as well.

Legislation rarely take effect immediately. Could be it's just now being carried out.

The sickest part is taxachusetts wasn't charging any, and these are the people who want to tax everything possible. I mean if they had the ability to tax me when I scratch my head, they would. Also completely off topic, want to legalize marijuana but ban selling water in plastic bottles. Not that two have any connection, but funny when you think of it.

If you say so. The day I start thinking about 3 cents a day is the day I rethink my entire life. Stop making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I dunno how you look at things but,for me as I said every penny counts. It's like an avalanche effect..70c here .10 there pretty soon your talking hundreds of dollars per year.If you have money to burn I suppose it doesn't matter.

I worked for the state of Texas for over 17 years and the legislature always meets in January through May of ODD years, and all laws go into effect September 1st of those same years. Our legislature only meets every two years ,unless special sessions are called by the governor. No special sessions were called this year and Governor Perry was running for President most of last fall. Something is not right about this increase. I am wondering if DISH is collecting the profits for this "Texas surcharge".

Geez...... the current administration loves people like you.

HanoverPretzel is gonna have a field day with this.

Confused about the whole tax thing here in TX had to research this a while back. found we are billed the state 6.25% + "Special Purpose Districts" (variable) for a grand total of 6.39%

Sales and Use Tax

I can assure you that the current administration doesn't love people like me.... I will leave it at that.

I'm just saying I care about material things not something like this.

It might be the comptroller... TX just convinced Amazon to start collection state sales tax, or pay a huge amount in back taxes. They ruled that having a "sister" corporation running a warehouse in TX to fulfill Amazon orders was a presence of Amazon in TX and they owned back taxes to all the TX sales for the past few years.

Amazon compromised to collect tax going forward.

Perhaps Dish is now being taxed on something now that they were not taxed before.

States are getting very aggressive in interpreting tax laws to cover more things that they may have not collected on before. This could have happened without a change in the law.

Sounds very plausible. Either rate , we're going to have to pay it now in Texas. Since we have no state income tax, the only way they can raise revenue is to create new FEES and increase existing ones . They are following the DISH way of doing business, since they are the King of made up , charge it because we can FEES.

Follow up on original post. DISH is ripping off Texans!!!!!!!!!!!! New business week, I called DISH to again question the additional charges on my bill. CSR again stated this was a surcharge impossed by TEXAS of .62 cents the additional .04 cents was sales tax applied to that .62 charge.

I got off the phone and called the Texas Tax Office and was informed that the State of Texas imposes no taxes on satellite delivery of programming. The programming provider can at it's disgression apply a fee to the account. Is it time for another class action lawsuit?

DISH IS RIPPING OFF TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!

Last week I posted a thread about a surcharge on my bill the follow up is more lies from DISH.

Today I called DISH again for a .66 cent increase on my bill the CSR I spoke to today explained the State of Texas had imposed a .62 cent surcharge on our bills the additional .04 cents was State Sales Tax being applied to that fee increase.

I next called the State Tax Office to inquire about the fee. The Tax Office told me Texas has no fees applied to delivery of satellite services, DISH is stealing this money!!! The Tax Office said that DISH can impose any fees it wants but it should not be disclosed as a State of Texas imposed fee. I really like the line from the DISH CSR that DISH was not making money on the surcharge, pure bull

Is it time for another class action law suit against DISH? This small charge applied on the second largest state in the union is going to add up to $millions in a very short time for DISH.
