Special Retailer Chat Recap - February 14, 2013

I wish I could do that too... but then if I miss a chat and dont report the "big News" and there is actually Big News then they say I am not doing my job.

This chat had big news for the retailers.. just no big news for the consumers.

Not really sure I qualify it as "Big News" for retailers. Not going to help get the phones ringing.

Certainly isn't your fault! Besides, even when Dish does have big news, they have a way of messing the message up anyway. Blockbuster comes to mind, leaving people to have to guess and suppose what is actually going to happen.

Also, even if there is big news, it is nice to see it without the wait. :)

Except until recently Direct TV did not have several channels in HD that Dish did. So you could make the same claim about Direct TV.... Even Charter does not have a couple channels we do watch on Dish in HD....
Charter has WFN in HD. I want it back.

Don't worry Scott, one of us would be quick to post it on here for you or at least send the news on to you to post.

For a number of retailers they are going to make out nicely on the new costs. :) A few have told me this is the shot in the arm they needed.
What came first, the chicken or the egg ? It won't help retailers much if customers aren't signing up (in higher numbers than normal). Those new costs do NOTHING for customers.

I looked at the prices regarding equipment. While it is nice for retailers to spend less upfront money. However dish could do like directv & after 3 days not make a retailer liable, instead of 180 days like dish does on equipment. I'll still steer people towards directv when I can, dish for me is just a backup.

100 bucks or a 1000 bucks for a receiver makes no difference if the phone ain't ringing. Can't see how any retailer can look at this as a "shot in the arm". More like a shot across our bow.

No talk on programming.

They are going over the Hopper upgrade option for existing customers... $100 to upgrade to a Hopper with Sling... $50 to upgrade to a Gen 1 Hopper...

So for those of us with a Gen 1 Hopper we can upgrade for $100 now due to before it was like $300.

Like a few mentioned earlier,I feel Dish is firing blanks with this very underwhelming news. The writing is on the wall,DTV only added 200K subs last quarter.Online streaming is becoming a much more viable, cheaper alternative.I also feel they can't squeeze much more out of existing subs. They are going to have to make the programming choices more attractive or watch more and more subs cut the cord.

I agree with you 100%. This should be the time that DISH looks into theme packs, you add or don't add to a base pack, like I have already suggested and or possible Welcome pack /Family pack in HD. A lower essential pack in HD is badly needed at DISH. Sports free programming packs are also badly needed. The point where cord cutting is getting closer and closer. The demographics in age alone are pointing at the end of cable /satellite programming packs as they exist today. THe younger generation is not into watching tv and paying for it. They watch over the computer ; Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, etc. Since the older generation is always dieing out every day and the younger is not subscribing ,the point of diminishing returns has arrived. They either need to adapt to survive or die out entirely.
