Sony A8F Oled

Looking at adding a second OLED to the house, since I love the A1E I think this will be my choice.

Been keeping up with comparisons at AVS from people like Dnice, seems the Sony’s are still a little ahead LG’s new chip in video processing and motion, and it has been confirmed the A8F is using the 2018 panel.


Seems the LG (C8) is up around 850 nits now, were the Sony runs around 700 (A1E), and we should know tonight if the A8F is any brighter. If not, Id guess LG is pushing the panel harder to get more output which is one plus. If LG could get their motion issues down it’s be my first choice, but I am too used to Sony now and it produces a lovely image.


I’ll post more here as we learn more. One other odd thing of note, the LG C8 is priced the same as a A8F (and both are more than the A1E). I really do not understand LG’s plan here, you’d figure they would want to be several hundred less than the Sony.

It’s funny what we get use to as far as motion is concerned. I have a Sony HW40 projector and the motion is flawless in my eyes. I had several Samsung TVs and never had a problem with motion until I tried their 4k 2 years ago. They have obviously changed something with motion as I tried again with a Q7 and the motion was awful. I bought the LG OLED65E7P and the motion is good with the exception of ghosting footballs every once in a while. Not as good as the Sony projector but acceptable. I tried a Sony 930c a few years back thinking the motion would be the same as projector. I was wrong.
I’ve been able to dial in motion with Directv to get rid of judder with a touch of SOE but I’m ok with that.
At least there are no frame dropouts like with the newer Samsung’s watching Directv.

And not everyone is as sensitive to it. My 2016 E6 was pretty good, but I like a little dejudder. The LG was more prone to double imaging on pans and artifacts vs what I have seen on the 940E and A1E. Its like once you see it the way you like it, its hard to change LOL.

I still may be willing to try a C8, because another 150 nits in HDR is appealing. Im going to watch both displays like a hawk, and then decide right before Chad comes around again. The other cool thing about LG this year is the advanced LUT calibration, and of course you can actually calibrate dolby vision mode where on the Sony it is locked.

That sounds like the opposite of last year where you said LG greyed out the settings under DV and Sony based it on the adjustable SDR settings. I guess we'll know more in 24-48 hours.

In 2016, the LG's had DV, but you could not adjust it at all.
In 2017, the LG's had DV which was locked again, but Calman created a way to calibrate it for DV, and then load the new settings into LG's DV mapping engine. Not everyone can do this, but at least you can calibrate it. You have to have a way to trigger it into DV, then test patterns, and then use Calman to flash the engine with new settings.
In 2018, the LG's are setup the same way, but, now have a better LUT and autocal they worked on with Calman.

The Sonys map HDR and DV from the SDR calibration in 2017, which works well, just keeps you from fine tuning as much as the LG. Some would argue the errors are lower than the human eye so does it matter?

As far as the 2018 Sony, I expect it to work the same as 2017, but the A8F ridiculously launched without DV...

IF I don't have a remote handy ..... where is the POWER button to turn the TV On ?

Yes, I'm serious ....

Sometime they put them UNDER the set, but this TV is too low to do that. (about an 1/8th inch above the table its on)
Is it on the back ?
I haven't been able to look closely at the back ... I even tried to download the manual and I haven't found the answer.

TY, its a 65" that I'm looking at, but it should be the same regardless ...

I went over to Av Forum to see what they have to say about it seeing its not BRAND new, but New .... The last post they have is from last April .... they said the thread would be closed unless your an owner or a perspective owner .... well I am a Perspective Owner and can't see anything past April ....
That said, I'm not a member there yet, was just trying to get info and see what others said about it, but thats garbage that you can't ask questions or get any info in that thread.

After looking at the manual you provided, I'm guessing that it is on the lower left when looking at from the back, which is where Most are ... however, it also shows a sensor in the center .... That would be on the front ... you wouldn't put the sensor on the back.
We know there no physical buttons on the Front !

I DID find the On/Off Switch after all ... once I have an opportunity to actually look at the TV when it wasn't on display ....

I went ahead and bought it, will set it up tomorrow.

Going to look at TVs tomorrow. Wasn’t planning on a new one until ATSC 3.0 hit. I may just cheap out this time with a budget model to get by for a year or two.
