I would love to see 70 new channels coming down the road very soon. Even though there are only a couple of channels that I watch that is not currently in HD.
If you would read my post again I said I will take quantity AND quality over just quality. If offered one or the other I agree quality first.

Well as we move more into the future I'd like to see every channel in HD.......SD is something of the past
It has nothing to do with what you watch and everything to do with what is available nationally. Between basic cable and premiums, we are missing a lot of stuff. Probably more than 70 channels... there are 26 HBO/MAX channels in HD... we get 4. There is 22 right there... that leaves 48... we are missing Starz, Showtime, Epix, Playboy, etc in HD. Then you start counting the basics. You get the idea. It isn't about you.
I will not be content with DirecTV until they at least compete with FIOS, ATT, and cable companies. The HBO/MAX thing alone says it all. DirecTV does not take non-sports HD serious all. Instead they are going apesh*t over "3D," which very few households care about.
OK, again, BACK TO TOPIC of test channels.

OK... so we all know these are the initial channels... what further is there to discuss? Hopefully you are right that those are the initial channels and to add further, that better only be a partial list.

Dont forget about the list that Stone Cold tossed out at us. Alot of users here stated they spoke to Direct cust service reps (I know how unreliable they are) and they read off alot of the same channels Stone Cold posted (Africa Channel, Fearnet, etc). I bet some of those show up initially too. At least we have an idea of what to POSSIBLY expect the first few weeks of roll outs.
The part time RSN channel would convert to 24/7. That's already happened with a number of RSNs.
I subscribe to all of the premium channels but since bandwidth is limited I don't need 26 HBO and Cinemax channels taking it all up. They only have so many movies to show over and over again. I would rather have some diversity in the new HD lineup.
DirecTV needs to compete. You'd be hard pressed to show me a cable company that carries less HBO/MAX channels in HD than D*. Even Time Warner/Bright House have finally gotten on board and picked up many of the feeds.
It is plain and simple, if they don't add premium channels, many subscribers will leave. They have plenty of open slots now and a good chunk of them better be filled with HD premiums.
Comcast Bay Area now has more HD premiums than Direct TV and they are terrible. My patience is really starting to wear thin with Direct TV. They could at least give us an estimate of when and what channels we will be getting.

It basically falls back on ones opinion. I personally enjoyed having all 26 HBO/MAX channels in HD when I had FIOS and want at least some of them now that I have DirecTV.
But whether you watch/subscribe to premiums or not, anybody can surely see the value in adding more HBO channels. I am just one guy but the best thing DirecTV can do to keep me into the future is to make an honest to god attempt at adding HD channels. A June 2007 press release promised 11-13 HBO/MAX channels in HD for December 2007. Here we are in 2010 and that press release never was fulfilled.
If they don't add more HBO/MAX channels, as well as other premiums, and just fill the space with garbage again or leave it empty, I will leave D* in June.
They are at a crossroads here. They have done everything under the sun for sports fans. Now it is time to at least throw the premium channel fans a bone.
They actually have the capacity to carry all 26 HBO/MAX channels, and we'll say 10 for a few more Showtimes, Starz, Encore, and TMC W/Extra E/W... so we'll say under 40. If 40 of the 70 were premium channels they wouldn't hear the cries of the premium channel guys like me for ten years. They'd be competing. That would leave them 30 slots to add HD nationals like Tru HD, Travel Channel HD, ID HD, etc... The top remaining 30 basic channels.
This would round out the 70 channel adds and make almost everybody happy.
But they will probably sit on this capacity fro a long time and "slowly" add channels here and there. Now is not the time for a slow roll out. They are behind everybody else. They need to just add them all and hide their embarrassment. We'll see what happens.
I'd like to have some idea why exactly anyone would need 26 HBO and Cinemax channels. Most of those channels just repeat the same content over and over. I can understand wanting more than what is currently offered but 26 is a little overboard.
Doesn't affect me personally, but the key is to have decent selection for people without DVRs. Turn the TV on at 8pm and find a movie they want to watch - in HD.
