Some Interesting Dish Info

I think a lot of peoples problem with this, including myself, is it's just the principle of it. The DVR fee's we already pay SHOULD cover this, but it doesnt, so like a lot of other people, I will pay the $40. Especially since it is just a one time fee.

So if you dont like it dont order it. I don't know what else to tell you.

There are lots of R&D costs involved with this feature that MOST folks will not use. (Hell most folks who have an HDTV think they are watching HDTV even though they dont have any programming or tuner feeding their TV's HD)

In addition there will be an increase of support calls because of this feature.

This feature was created because of the requests of our hard core users.

I find it funny the ones who are upset about spending $40 onetime to turn this new feature on are some of the same folks telling us how they were going to build these multi terabyte HD libraries.

I could see complaints if it was a monthly fee, but for a one time setup fee it is really not to bad.

WOW....you made some good points there. You may have sold me on it.....but only if the $39.99 will apply to future 211 USB activations.

The other issue is, you know its gonna be buggy, new software always is. I might wait it out till all my new shows startup in October and see how happy people are, and give Dish time to fix it. Im not under pressure for recording space now, but will be come the fall.

Whats gonna be bad, if it is buggy, is all the threads we'll be seeing next month about people who paid $40 and have lost recordings. I really hope thats not the case, because people are gonna be po'd.

True, but if it is perfect, where normal people have no problems, there will still be those who will form a new cult that believes the programs moved to the hard drive are all hd lite now. I know that will come up.
There will always be technical support issues. The way to tell how lame some of them are is when you get an FAQ that begins with- Did you plug it in? Is your USB hard drive USB 2.0?

Hehe, very true.

I honestly dont know the answer to this. Since you are turning a non DVR into a DVR there could be a charge, in addition to monthly DVR fees.

It is amazing that when something finally happens that people have been crying for that they really needed it there is a ONE TIME FEE that is cheap in comparison to some other technology upgrades they COMPLAIN! Did anyone really think that this would be a freebie! Companies have to put some R&D into anything they try to develope and need to recoup some invested money. I know that this is probably only a software situation, but when they developed the 622 they had this in mind and put hardware into the unit for future upgrades. It just amazes me how cheap some people can get but then turn around and blast Dish for not giving everything to them for free! The other people I love are the ones who jump ship and RUN to the other guy because they didn't get what they wanted for FREE! I personally won't use this feature because I just don't record that much, but for others this is a great moment for them. I also agree with the last post from Scott, you just can't please everyone.

It amazes me how many times people are gonna regurgitate this same statement.

All providers (cable & satellite) should have the option of renting or owning the box in addition to be given a choice of where they can obtain guide data (paid or free subscription service). In my case I have a Sony HD DVR (discontinued) that worked quite well with cable and their free ad-supported GemStar TV Guide On Screen...just pay the $1.75 montly cablecard fee.

Personally, I would gladly use the free TVGOS if I could with my 622s, if only it were possible to load the guide via USB/Ethernet. To be honest, I would even pay GemStar $20-$30 each year in order to be able to download the guide and upload/download it to my receivers.

Time for a poll, someone!
A. Who's gonna, or not get it?
B. Do you think $39.99 is too much, or reasonable.

I'd set it up, but don't know how.

That's what I'm planning on doing it, I will pass on this one. And like I said before, this feature is for a minority group that are willing to pay.
Of course, we can wait 6 months to a year and they'll lower the price to $29 and a year later, lower it again. Let the early adopters pay.... :)

The point is, they still didn't have to charge that much, it's pure greed.

No it isn't greed at all (before you flame me, think about it).

Like it or not (and I'm not saying I like it any more than you do).
It is "Free Market Economy".
It is "Business".
It is "Supply and Demand".
It is "American".

Some may find the enabling fee "excessive", some may find it "reasonable". This is how business works in a free society. It is the foundation of our economy and as such will be subject to increases and discounts should the market warrent.

I have no problem paying this fee, but only if I decide that I must have additional storage. Right now my DVR is hovering around 22 hours (HD) of recordable space on the drive. If some show comes along that I feel that I must archive (as opposed to purchase the DVDs) I will weigh my storage options at that time.

Like it or not, this is Dish's business model. As subscribers, we are always free to change providers if we don't like it.

Spence

I have two fears.

1. That Dish will decide to one day abandon this $40 fee and I will feel dumb for having paid it in the first place. I remember when the OTA 8VSB tuner for a Dish 6000 receiver was $150 and the 8PSK module was $79. I paid for both. Not too long later the 8PSK module was free and the 8VSB could be had from Dish for $9 + shipping.

2. That this will eventually evolve like the DVRs did into a monthly fee. Does the phrase "we were leaving money on the table" ring any bells out there? At least if we get in on this now, we will likely be grandfathered if they go that route. Like 501/508 DVRs.
