Sling player banned from iPhone apps?

I've been on AT&T (at the time Cingular) since 1996. Like all cell phone companies, it's infuriating how they nickel and dime you, but for me AT&T has always been easy to work with. The few times I've had billing issues they've always fixed them right away. Service-wise I have no complaints, especially since moving to 3G.

I'm not sure what the problems are that people have with ATT Wireless. They've been fine for me for many years, going back to Cingular. (Although, they did kinda suck way back 10 or 11 years ago when I first moved to CA.)
+1

I've had no problems with AT&T Wireless and I really like my iPhone.

The real truth is that the Slingplayer will be made available for the 3 Gen. IPHONE only. Why because the next IPHONE will use ATT 4 g network which will be faster with a whole lotta of bandwidth.
There is no way that is true, unless you don't think there will be another iPhone revision for 3 years... AT&T: 4G LTE network in 2012

The next iPhone may have an upgraded 3G radio, but not 4G; again, even if they put one in the phone (which they won't), there wouldn't be any network to connect to; not for a while at least.

What I don't get is that there are other phones and blackberrys on ATT that already have a Sling Player app so, why are they picking on the iPhone (if this is true). I think it has more to do with ATT wanting to start there own video service for the iPhone.

Maybe they are worried because they have some knowledge about the cross section of iPhone users and SlingBox users, and the number is larger than equivalent blackberry or palm demographics.

I was just about to point that out. I've been on ATT for long enough that I used to call the service Cingular and I've got nothing but possitive experience to talk about. I've currently got a Tilt phone and run the Slingplayer mobile application that works great with my original version Slingbox. Get a VERY watchable picture and watch it all the time when I travel (which is a lot).

If ATT were simply trying to keep Slingbox off their network, they're a little late. I'm sure something else is going on.

There is your key! Many of the other slingbox users are sporadic. IPhone Slingbox users would probably use it a good bit. Could you imagine 10-15 slingbox users on one tower at the same time? POOF!

In addition, the story goes that many changes needed to be made on the carrier's side to support features like visual voice mail. Plus, Apple wanted control of the user experience with iTunes, and didn't want buying an iPhone to be like buying a typical cell phone. Supposedly, AT&T was the only company to agree to all this and take a chance on a new, unproven product.

So, they get props for at least being a bit innovative. It would be great, though, if the iPhone were available to anyone on any carrier.

It's also said that Apple approached Verizon initially, but Verizon said "No thanks."

OOOPS!

Anyway, I sure hope the Slingbox app gets approved.

Verizon iPhone More Likely When 4G Networks Arrive in 2010 - Mac Rumors

"Mr. Seidenberg also addressed the notion of Apple Inc.'s iPhone ever coming to the Verizon Wireless network, saying it is more likely that Apple would be willing to work with the carrier under the fourth-generation, or 4G, network, which follows the same technology standard as AT&T Inc.'s 4G plans. He said Apple never seriously considered making a CDMA version of the iPhone because it didn't have as wide a distribution opportunity."

I personally will never get a iPhone because I won't pay the high price at&t wants for monthly service. If Apple were smart they would open it up to all carriers. I have Sprint and will never leave because how much money is saved on my monthly package. And I have heard the sound quality sucks on at&t.

I in fact have a 16gb 2nd gen iPod Touch (bought less then 2 months ago mainly for the Sling feature) that will be going on eBay as soon as I get my Pre. Thanks Apple and at&t for making my decision easy.

And yes I know Sling hasn't announced anything for the Pre yet but, the odds are looking better on the Pre then the iPod/iPhone right now in my opinion.

I feel ya. I'm sticking with my $30 a month plan on Sprint with the Touch Pro. No one can touch it...500 min, unlimited N/W, unlimited text, unlimited data, free data/voice roaming. Been enjoying the Slingplayer mobile for more than a year now and the many other free apps.

I don't think they are picking on the Iphone here, it is just the only one they can control. If you look at the TOS of your data plan, you will see that streaming data is a no-no. On other phones there isn't much they can do because you have full control over what you install on it. With the iphone on the other hand, apple has the ability to control what goes on it. There for they can stop the sling player on the iphone where on other phones they cannot.

Yes it is looking good, I was actually with the person who submitted the app to apple today and he even logged into the website to check its status while I was standing there.
