Sky Angel Plans to Charge Lifelong Subscribers for "Special Secular" Channels

The dish we have can only receive signals, it can not send signals. How would SA know how many are watching?

I don't know how it works but AM and FM radio stations know how many are listening and regular broadcast stations know how many are receiving their signal with antennas and rabbit ears. I don't know how that works.

AM / FM and over the air (OTA) TV station owners know due to ratings.. They have no 'true" way to monitor what someone actually has their 'radio or tv' tuned into.

monthly paying for lifetimers? I don't think so........

Actually the lifetimers are the ones who took a gamble on sky angel in the beginning when they needed $ to finance SA. We didn't know if sky angel would last 5 months, 5 years or 50 years. If it lasted 5 months we lost $, 5 years we broke even , anything over that and it paid off for us(all just aprox figures to make a point). We already prepaid for any and all sky angel broadcasts IN ADVANCE!! its the lifetimers that made it possible for SA to be here for you monthly people. You had the same opportunity to pay in advance that we did. Its kind of like prepaying for your oil or propane you lock in the price even if it goes up down the road. what sky angel is doing to lifetimers is kind of like your oil company saying , wait a minute we didn't know it would be such a cold winter and that you would use that much oil. We are losing $ on the deal so we won't give you any more oil unless you pay us again.

I did not know that even though I have participated in Nielsen surveys twice. When I hear some of these radio hosts, like Bill O'Reilly, talk about their ratings, it sounds as if they know exactly what we are listening to and watching. In fact, I think he has even said such. Although I guess statistical sampling is pretty accurate.

According to Wikipedia, "the fee the cable TV system must pay to a cable TV network will vary depending on whether it is a basic or premium channel and the perceived popularity of that channel." I guess the key word in that sentence is "perceived".

So why would these premium channels have increased their rates to S/A unless they have some way to figure out they are quite popular among S/A viewers? We just did a Nielsen survey this past November and I suspect FOXNews and Hallmark were in it a number of times.

Big brother watching?

They obviously can/do access your dish box. If you have DISH you can buy movies through your remote, without evr picking up the phone. Unfortunately I think its more common that we think that are movements are tracked. Take internet cookies for example..... they can also tell when someone is getting an illegal signal so obviously there IS monitoring going on.

If you have the box plugged into the phone line it allows you to order PPV without calling. If you dont have it hooked to the phone line then you can't order PPV unless you call in or order online.

Since mine isnt hooked ot the phone line, Dish (in my case) doesnt know what I am watching :)

wouldn't be too sure about that

People wit illegal boxes don't have phone lines. also they activate your service on and off without a phone line (I also don't have a phone line on mine)

The satellite provider (Dish, SA, etc) sends out activation and deactivation codes via the satellite. This is ONE WAY communication. If no phone line is connected, they have no way of knowing what is going on on your end. It still amazes me how when you call for programming changes, etc, that within seconds you have your new programming.

stealing wasn't the point here, big brother was

yes of course they are stealing. the point I was trying to make is that phone lines or NOT SA/Dish can tell, at least to some degree what we are watching . maybe its the signal strenght you pull, who knows. I used the fact that the illegal boxes got caught to prove my point!!!!!

The way the illegal boxes "get caught" is that the providers have counter measures and are always changing the "code" so without proper authorization, the illegal box becomes a doorstop. The providers again have no way of knowing the exact # of illegal boxes. They can only know how many legit ones there are.

no they can't. Its one way transmission

I used the fact that the illegal boxes got caught to prove my point!!!!!

huh? Have no clue what you are talking about there

if someone is stealing Sky Angel then you have issues.

People were (at one time anyway), stealing DISH service (paying for basic package but had an illegal box to get all the channels). they did get caught. how were they caught if the signal isn't 2 way? meaning skyangel/dish can tell what/when we are watching tv. if tehre are internet cookies, why not TV cookies? How do you order movies if its not 2 way capable?

um, not to get into the technicalitites but dish sent a signal via satellite that fried those illegal cards. Dish does it all the time.

meaning skyangel/dish can tell what/when we are watching tv.
no they can't. They can't tell if I'm watching the Nascar race, Angel One, CNN, ESPN, baseball, a cooking show or an adult program.

How do you order movies if its not 2 way capable?

The box dials in via the phone line and sends the reciever info to Dish and when you order a movie, there is a 7 digit number. So if you want to order Wrestlemania, you find that channel, and if you have the phone line hooked up, then you say "buy". The box dials out and says to Dish "receiver 123456789 with smart card S005555678 wants to purchase PPV program 6602345"

If you do not have a phone line hooked up, you cannot order PPV through the receiver. You have to call in and give them the phone number on the account which will pull up the above info (receiver and smart card) in most cases. When you order, then it sends a signal via satellite to your box. The reciever does NOT NOT NOT send a signal out via the dish (AKA transmitting). The recievers are receive only. I don't know how many different ways I can say it. If you do not have a phone line hooked up, Dish/Direct/SkyAngel/Bell ExpressVu & Star Choice (pick your provider) does not know what you are watching.

Thieves get caught the old fashioned way. They talk, the buy and sell illegal software and hardware. The Feds need only go where the illegal activities are talked about or practiced.

There is NO way the Feds, or any one else for that matter, can get the information from our receive only boxes for SA or FTA!

OK everyone, this is not about $4.99 it is about honesty, integrity and keeping one's word. Long ago a man's word was his bond, the handshake was often used to seal it. The handshake is a carryover from the days of blood covenants between brothers. The "bro" handshake is especially poignant in that it with the intertwined thumbs and wrists pressed together is reminiscent of a blood brother covenant. Nowdays it seems even a written agreement is not binding. Instead it is read looking for loopholes rather than keeping the word, somewhat like many read the Bible trying to excuse their sin.

Excuse me for preaching a bit, but we entered a somewhat risky agreement with Robert W. Johnson, Sr. in order to give him some upfront capital to fulfill his dream. He passed that hurdle and we enjoyed many years of great service, I since 1997. Sky Angel did take Dish to court at or about the time of the transponder failure, but Sky Angel lost in that suit and the decision left Sky Angel without 3ABN, Golden Eagle and Spirit. The channels chosen to replace those lost did not meet the "Statement of Faith" but that was explained away as the channels were somewhat "family friendly", they were not addressed specifically as being secular at that time, in fact if one reads current advertising there is no mention of secular it is for over thirty channels of "family friendly" entertainment.

Some imply that we are not judge or to take Sky Angel to court. However, that concept in the Word is meant for believers to judge believers. After all are we not to judge angels (maybe even Sky Angels)? But the assumption is that brothers would respond to that judgment by their elders. We have a situation where Sky Angel ignores our queries, so are they brothers?

If we say nothing then we stand in approval of their sin and invite the scam to intrude even further into the programming package. That is, additional "faith based" channels could be removed either intentionally, or as a result of squabbles as were the three, and replaced by secular channels for which a fee is required to cover the costs of Sky Angel's action. The only reason a basic package was mentioned in the Subscriber's Provisions was because at one time Sky Angel had agreements with educational institutions (maybe Bob Jones and others) for programing that required registration and fees. That fell by the wayside for undisclosed reasons.

Sky Angel has the clear right to select programming at its sole discretion. I am not sure it has the right to choose programming that fails its stated "Statement of Faith", but certainly it has no right to charge for what is touted as "family friendly" programming as that is what we entered into covenant for.

Taking them to court over this would definitely violate Scripture as I read it.

I do question whether this fits with their promises, but I am not all that worried. I have definitely got value, even though my father paid far more than the "normal" lifetime cost for the lifetime sub. They will be continuing to face strong challenges as they go forward. I am not sure they will make it.

Aside from the Scriptural implications, winning such a lawsuit would likely just speed their demise. Dish's DishFamily package has an attractive package, when viewed by the same standards of "family friendly" and the base cost of SkyAngel at $14.99 brings them within $5 of its price. Sure, they have the Christian channels, but I am not sure that is enough.

Competing with the "big boys" in the satellite field is unlikely to turn out well. Suing them certainly won't do anything to help those problems, even if it makes someone "feel" justified.

It's not about feeling "justified" for one to offer a service as a "Christian" and fail to meet that commitment therein is but one form of taking the Lord's name in vain. Believers should be held to a higher standard. Actually the scriptural approach would be for all injured parties to contact Sky Angel pointing out the breach of commitment, then Sky Angel should submit to that judgment. However, Sky Angel has chosen the worldly way of ignoring queries by customers.

In contract law a contract document is most often brought to bear against the writer because he is assumed to have had an inordinate amount of time to research and prepare the document. Lifetime can be a long time and the writer of the provisions full well knew that, now his son is seeking to escape that commitment.
