Shocking News: McGwire Admits Using Steroids!!!!

WHY??!! Because I do not agree with YOU??!! Please.... YOU don't think if Mantle and Ruth had steroids...they wouldn't have used it? They didn't give a ratz a$$ about records...they wanted to win by ANY MEANS necessary. They use to have spies in centerfield with binoculars to see if they could read signs from the catcher or manager. Don't know about you...but THAT was cheating. They use to have pitchers doctor up balls for years until it was banned....THAT was cheating.

I have given you plenty of proof just by the single list on the Mitchell report. PLENTY of Mendoza line hitters that steroids did little to NOTHING to improve their stats. For every McGuire, I give you a couple of Dave Seguis and Dave Roberts.

Just agree to disagree and move on dude.....I know I am not gonna change anyones minds here because they have already been made up. Hell, there are still some folks believe Pete Rose never bet on baseball though the proof is as plain as the nose on their face.

...move on dude...

When did this become about whether Mantle or Ruth would have used steroids? That's a moot point if there ever was one.

The bottom line is, Mark McGwire DID use steroids. We're not talking about Mendoza, we're talking about Mark McGwire. And anyone who doesn't think steroids helped him hit home runs is ignoring the numbers.

OK, too many posts to read here, so I am sure somebody else may have touched on this -
But does anybody else find the timing of this announcement curious? Right after figuring out he's not getting onto the HoF without coming clean about his steroid abuse?

At least I found his apology sincere, late, but sincere.

Well this was the third year in a row McGwire did not get enough votes, it's not the first time. McGwire probably announced it now, right in the middle of the NFL playoffs, to deflect as much attention away from it as possible. If he announced it right before spring training, or during the season, he would have had the spotlight all to himself.

It was obviously carefully orchestrated, with the interview with St Louis-friendly Bob Costats planned perfectly. Now when he gets to spring training he can refuse to address the issue, saying he already dealt with it.

He is most likely doing this for selfish reasons, nothing altruistic...maybe he needs money and that's why he's coming back to coach, or maybe he decided he didn't want to live under a rock anymore.

The man cheated for a long time, and all of those stupid touches to the heart with Sammy Sosa in 1998 seem ridiculous now.

He did use PEDs and it help him stay healthy enough to hit home runs. Did he hit more because of the PEDs...most say yes, I still say not sure. Believe what YOU wanna believe.

Not sure?? If he didn't use PEDs then he probably wouldn't have played as long, therefore not hitting as many as he did. That's what you're saying, right??

Paul I found the timing curious more with him signing up to be the hitting instructor for the Cardinals.

NOW, why did the Cardinals sign a guy that has a lifetime average just above .260 is beyond me unless they might have been doing him a favor to get into the HOF.

Yes, I am saying that. I am also saying that he was capable of hitting homers in the upper 40s and lower 50s WITHOUT PEDs because he did in his 2nd year in the Majors as a skinny runt while playing in 150 or so games.

Oh and ONE MORE thing about bringing up Mantle and Ruth....someone had brought them and I was only answering his comments. PLEASE make sure you keep up before you try to do your usual butcher job to murky the waters.;)

That's all well and good, but by your own admission if he didn't take the PEDs he most likely wouldn't have played as long and it wouldn't matter if he was capable of hitting 100 homers a year with his "god-given abilities"; you can't hit homers if you're not playing. :eureka:

Yep....he probably needed the PEDs to stay healthy to hit the home runs. Because more than likely once on he stayed on....we will never know if he could have stayed healthy enough to hit the home runs without the PEDs.....can we? We will never know.

I was just asking...you really need to relax.

Most people believe what the numbers tell us. McGwire's home run totals took off AFTER he started taking steroids. That's crystal clear, not murky at all. ;)

McGwire also admitted to taking Human Growth Hormone.

Ok.....look at his stats before he started taking PEDs. When healthy, he averaged approx. 45+ home runs...and if you averaged out those season he was not healthy, it came out to the same. He only had 3 monster years where he hit 70, 65 and 58....everything was else was average....in 16 season. Go check out "what the numbers tell us" yourself.;)

You need to stop saying I am pulling the "race card" when I am not. You started this not me. I said in my first post that you were right, but this is not the thread to discuss it.
If i was going to pull any card i would have used HANK Aron!! I think you can understand the difference i did not mention race! I did however mention how mlb had always been a league of cheats! If you don't believe me i can post in a new thread for you!:up

This is what the numbers tell me:

Full seasons only:
When he was clean (1987-1992) McGwire averaged 36 HR.
After he started juicing (1995-2001) McGwire averaged 49 HR (and that's including his last two seasons of "only" 32 and 29 HR.)

Was it the steroids or the "man upstairs" that miraculously invigorated the latter half of his career??

Baseball sold it's sole to the devil in the 90's. They were losing viewers and fans to the strike, then some genius thought the long ball would rejuvenate some excitement for the game. After all, "chicks dig the long ball", right?

I'm not saying Selig and company orchestrated this scandal, but I am saying they knew about it, but turned a blind eye to it. Selig deserves all the humiliation MLB is going through right now. He could've prevented this, but he didn't.

Credibility is everything in sports and as far as I'm concerned, baseball is losing more and more credibility each time a new juicer is brought to light.

The three 'Monster Years' are exactly what people are talking about regarding McGwire's steroids and Human Growth Hormone usage. ;)

He never came close to that without steroids.

he had 48 home runs without it....could he have done the same without the PEDs? Who knows....we will never know.
