Sheffield waived by Tigers

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo was just on the Red Sox pregame show, and said it could come down to the Red Sox and Rays acquiring Sheffield. I for one, highly doubt the Sox would be interested.

I was thinking about him going to Boston, it would be the perfect place, but they have NO WHERE to play him, IF Ortiz DH's, Sheff's not playing the outfield with the guys you've already got ....
How's that different than the platoon position that he described he did nt like in Detroit, as Leyland said, he was never platooned, but Sheffs idea was he was not playing enough, I guess.
He seemed to be in there most nights when he was hitting and even alot of nights when he was not.

Sheffs not going to take Elsbury or Bay's spot and that leave Drew and I know I'm missing another good outfielder , I just don't see it, if he wants to play regularly.

Jimbo is correct. Sheff had been a model citizen, and his bat (when healthy) really carried the team. I guess he just wears out his welcome every 3-4 years. He hasn't been 100% for quite a while now, but I think he may be done as a force at the bat. The years take a toll, and he isn't a spring chicken anymore. I do believe he gave his best while he was here, and he was a fan favorite, with all the people who used to wear their "Sheff" hats. I believe if he was 100% this year, he would have made a difference in our clubs fortune.

I agree, but Cafardo was saying that Sheffield told him he would love to play in Boston. Unfortunately, it would make sense from a Red Sox perspective for two reasons:

1. With Mike Lowell out indefinetly, Youkilis is moved to third base. Sheffield could see plenty of playing time- platooning at first base with Sean Casey, or spelling Bay, Drew and Ortiz from time to time.

2. And probably much more importantly, they would be blocking the Rays from getting him. The Rays, quite frankly, need a bat a lot more than the Red Sox do, with Crawford and Longoria out.

1. Would Sheff get enough playing time, filling in for those guys, he didn't like that role in Detroit this year as Detroit grooms younger players ...

2. This is very important you mentioned about the waiver situation, this is the only time in Tampa history that Boston can block a waiver pick up to the Rays :D
This may very well be the reason, IF he goes to Bostion.

Jimbo,
that's a very good question, and I think it depends on how long Mike Lowell is out for (I personally think he will be out longer than two weeks).
Therefore, the Sox would be in the market for a righthanded power hitter. Youkilis is now playing third, and I don't believe Sean Casey (now playing first) is an everyday player at this point in his career.

Why not? I believe he is about mid 30's at worst. I thought he played well for the Tigers, but he to leave here, because we needed power at the corners, and we all know Casey doesn't have that. But he's still a good hitter and a better than average glove at first, not to mention a great "clubhouse' guy.

Don't get me wrong, I love "The Mayor". But, like you said, he has NO power (which I think is necessary for a first baseman) and clogs up the basepaths like no other Red Sox player I've ever seen (THATS saying a lot :D). He's an ideal pinch hitter/start once or twice a week type.

The man has no wheels, that's for sure.:D In Detroit they timed him with a calendar, instead of a stopwatch.

He's got to be faster than Big Papi, isn't he ?
Neither of which you time with a watch :D

:haha:haha That's too funny. BTW, Casey has become one of the most well-liked teammates in a Red Sox uniform in years.

Yes, Casey has always been a classy guy, I hated to see him leave Cincy and then the Tigers and now you guy's have him, do the smart thing, keep him around :)

I got to where I couldn't stand all that mumbo-jumbo he does when he steps out of the batter's box after every single pitch. Drove me crazy.

Also, he crybabied about management when Danny Graves (who was grossly ineffective) was released. Well, Sean, I guess having your buddies on the team takes precedence over an effort to win by the people in charge.

I'm not a fan.

Dont want to change the title of the thread, but I will add this since we are talking about tigers I am tired of the these Brandon Inge supporters, for some reason he got a a bit of an ovation in the game last night. I get it he plays defense, but his catching is not that great and his hitting......Please I wont go there

ESPN said they waived him instead of saying he was on waivers which I thought that meant they just released him.

Brandon Inge is a very good Defensive player, just not at catcher.
I would take him at third or short any day.
Offensively, he will hit like alot of other guys, in the .22 - .260 range.
