Sheffield waived by Tigers

I just wanted to point out that he was NOT the malcontent with the Tigers that some made him out to be.

I will agree! However, I thought it was interesting to confirm what someone else posted...when Sheff isn't happy he opens mouth and stick both feet in, which seems to happen ever few years - it's like Sheffield PMS. Personally, it's hard not to like Sheff when he's on top of his game since he is a real talent. I just wish he would have "wised up" a little over the years.

With his contract he wont be going anywhere and with the 14 milllion for next year they would have to pay a large portion for a team to take him. I dont think Mr. Illitch can sell thay many pizza's (tiger owner little ceasers founder for those who may not know)

Though there is money coming off the books for next year Jones 7 million I think renteria around the same and pudge 13 million look for the payroll to be around 100 million, only due to the crazy long term contracts given to there starting five, and the six million dollar 212 hitting brandon inge

The bullpen was horrible again tonight

As SayJay said, no way anyone is going to pickup Sheff's $14 million contract with another year left.

And as for the DH thing, he's got more to worry about than "just" being the designated hitter. With Sheff batting .222, I would feel lucky to still be in the starting lineup at all!

He isn't gone yet, he has to get claimed which would mean the team would pick up his salary, or after he clears waivers the Tigers can trade him to anybody. He isn't gone yet, although we can hope!

sheff, a malcontent guy no way this guy is a team player and would go the extra mile [sarcam]. Don't tell me paul and jimbo that we did not tell you so.

He broke into the league with Milwaukee and never did very good
for Milwaukee and cried all the time he wanted to be traded to
Florida. Then I lost all respect for him after he was traded and
he admitted that he made errors and screwed up on purpose
at times so the Brewers would trade him.

He is damaged goods. His throwing shoulder is barely held together by rubber bands and sewing thread. NO ONE will pick him up with his mood, his damaged old body AND that big a$$ contract. Japan would rather have the equipment that he uses(bats, gloves and cleats) than the body that uses them. He will retire or some team will TRY to convince him to a minor league contract for the minimum.

...and has readily admitted that in both Milwaukee and San Diego he deliberately played down at a lower performance level because he was unhappy. Here's another REAL team player!!!!!

I have Sheffield's book- he was really unhappy to leave San Diego. I think you got that part wrong.

Exactly!

KCK,
that's why I've always admired your Angels since their championship season of 2002, it's a team of selfless players. I'd take players like Chone Figgins, Howie Kendrick, Garrett Anderson, Casey Kotchman, etc. any day of the week.

The Angels have come a LONG way from the days of Mo Vaughn and those interesting "harp logo" years.

Mo Vaughn, as popular an athlete that ever played in Boston. Then he ate his way out of baseball. BTW, does anyone know if Mo's STILL on the Mets books?

Nice compliment, Bill...thanks. All the credit goes to two men...Bill Stoneman (former GM) and Mike Scioscia. They came onboard and saw that the Angels organization was content to be the number 2 team in town behind the mighty Angels! Both men took the entire organization and turned it upside down pyschologically and they quickly had the ultimate success. Since then the formula has never changed from the parking lot attendant to the new GM Tony Reagins to the current owner Arte Moreno. When you speak to an Angels employee they are ALL on the same page and the damndest proudest people I have ever met. They have had their bad apples (Remember Guillen and his memorable helmet toss at first to Mike? He was benched for the playoffs and gone in the offseason!) You are with them or you're gone. And it sure has worked.

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo was just on the Red Sox pregame show, and said it could come down to the Red Sox and Rays acquiring Sheffield. I for one, highly doubt the Sox would be interested.

Talk about another me guy. For your sake, Bill, I hope the Sox don't get Sheffield.

I agree, but Cafardo was saying that Sheffield told him he would love to play in Boston. Unfortunately, it would make sense from a Red Sox perspective for two reasons:

1. With Mike Lowell out indefinetly, Youkilis is moved to third base. Sheffield could see plenty of playing time- platooning at first base with Sean Casey, or spelling Bay, Drew and Ortiz from time to time.

2. And probably much more importantly, they would be blocking the Rays from getting him. The Rays, quite frankly, need a bat a lot more than the Red Sox do, with Crawford and Longoria out.

Sheff has been hurt all year, he had shoulder surgery (I think it was ) over the off season and claimed he was as good as new when spring training got here... He was healthy for about a month all season. When he's healthy , he's very good and pounds the ball, when he's not, he struggles mightly, I think he's fought admitting his failing health for quite some time now.
His .222 avg. supports him being injured, I would be shocked if anyone took him, once he clears waivers, the Tigers can try to trade him.... Maybe TB will take a chance, seeing he's from TB.
