99.9999 % of people in the US are not aware of DirecTV's additions this past week or so. A few weeks ago, a relative asked me "so what is this HD thing I keep hearing about ?".

Most people probably think that DirecTV added their HD channels shortly before the ad campaign started ("I don't know what 1080i is, but I want it.")

Charlie already stated that he is not going to add HD channels that have no programming in HD (such as the 3 you mention).

You're correct about the Directv subscribers not knowing about the new HD channels. Well of course I'm not including subscribers that belong to one of the forums.

This morning I asked a co-worker how she liked the new HD channels on Directv and she just answered: "What new channels?".

Why not he carries A&E HD and History Channel HD. I dont think I have seen any HD from Animal Planet yet eaither.

I think History Channel HD has still not replaced equipment damaged in the fire. There were a few real HD programs in the first few days prior to the fire. It's not unlikely that it will be months before the repair work is done.

Animal Planet HD was part of the package of 4 Discovery HD channels. Discovery networks are amongst the most committed to HD, and there is plenty of HD across their 5 channels. I've watched several HD programs on Science-HD and a Jane Goodall chimp program in real HD on Animal Planet.

As far as A&E-HD, I think that is the experience that made Charlie want to not "HD channels" that don't show HD programs. A lot of the time, A&E-HD just upconverts their SD channel, when the programming being shown is easily available in HD (some of it from Blockbuster even).
