Satelliteguys Uplink Report Activity Discussion for the week ending 10/20/07

UHD will not be coming any time soon. I know from where I speak. I edited a 4k movie and we've had so many problems just getting it shown at that resolution.

That's 4096x2048, forgetting just the bandwidth necessary to carry that much data, and the cost of even owning a set capable of displaying that, movie production companies are not even ready for this stuff, TV stations are still trying to justify costs for HD conversion.... so as far as UHD goes.... well... my kids may be complaining about that one in 20 years.

If you're interested in 4k cinema, check out our website. Postcards From The Future

4k is being installed in some movie theaters: http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/b2b/broadcast_production/release/31919.html

We already exhibited it in 4k digital at the Landmark theater here in West LA on the Sony SXRD 4k projector, but it was a struggle to get the DCI files working on it initially, same issue at the academy theater as well. DCI spec hasn't been finalized. Finding a projector was just step 1 of about 5 or 6 more steps.

But 4k digital makes 1080p look blurry. If you ever get a chance to see a movie shot with a 4k camera and projected in that resolution it's quite impressive. All that resolution and no film grain.

One day it will be a push button operation, but it's not there yet. So any idea that UHD would be coming anytime soon to broadcast or satellite, should be quickly dismissed. It would be compressed to heck and probably would still take up a whole tranponder.

LAsooner, reading more about 4K technology, I saw the resolution should be 4096x2160. Are you mistyped second number or it had other meaning ?
And a size of that movies was around 2 TB, nowadays it take just two disks :). And a lot of CPU power.

I really didn't know that UHD existed.

My point was that there will always be something new and Geeky for us to discuss here at Satelliteguys.us this place may have lulls but it will be here for a little while longer.
