SatelliteGuys spamming? (No it's not)

Chaddux, please allow the admins to investigate the issue.

That'd be wonderful and that's exactly what I was hoping for. That's really the only response I wanted. It didn't appear that I was going to get any help when certain admin(s) choose not to help and just tell me to "Get used to it." Blow offs are usually an indication that no assistance will be provided.

I still think it ought to be closed since it's just degrading into confusion. When Scott has an answer, he could post to the thread even though it's closed and there will no further issues. But it's your call and it appears you think it's best left open.

And a random smiley for the road: :lick. I don't know what I'm licking but I bet it's good. :D

Like several others, I too got the spam. I am with Chaddux that I would like to know possibly why I got it. I know that spam is an inevitable part of being on the internet. I have no problem with it and I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I however am concerned about HOW it happened. If it was a freak coincidence then so be it. I just would like to make sure that if there is a hole somewhere, we get some mortar and patch it up. My primary e-mail account that is linked from here is reasonably spam-free and I'd like to keep it that way.

I too got the spam, and I got it on a few accounts where they are not even listed on satelliteguys or in it's database. (For example my cell phone which has it's own SatelliteGuys email address yet is not listed anywhere in SatelliteGuys databases and I also got it on other accounts which I use to monitor the server again not listed in the SatelliteGuys Database)

I should note as I was writing this my wife got one on her Yahoo account which is listed NO WHERE nor has she ever used it here at SatelliteGuys. I think this spam is bigger then just effecting our users.

We take great pride in protecting our members information and we use two seperate firewall processes, as well as some other software to keep everything secure.

I can say that in the past i have been offereda boatload of money for our membership list and their email information, but even if they came in with a blank check I would never sell or give your information away.

Bottom line is we work hard to protect your private information as we hate spam too. We thank you all for your trust.

For what it has worth, I now have a UNIX server security person looking into our server to make sure there was no compromise. (Just to be on the safe side.)

Again we hate SPAM as well. :)

Thanks guys!

Thank you, Scott. I appreciate the helpful answer. I still think it is highly suspicious. If you think about it like this: A whole bunch of users of a satellite forum get identical SPAM about satellite technology to way too many unpublished accounts. Although we may never know, there must be an explanation of some sort. It's almost too random to actually be random. Perhaps there is a backdoor exploit to the server? Maybe one opened by some sort of trojan? Maybe someone executed code on the server unintentionally. Still wouldn't explain accounts that are not anywhere in the SatelliteGuys database but just some possibilities.

We did a trojan scan and found nothing.

The only thought i have is possibly someone has been packet stiffing our SMTP port and grabbing addresses from there.

And I don't even know how feasable that idea is, just a thought from my head.

I have just talked to our security guy and his thought have matched mine on the topic. The server that sent the spam is located at the same place (The Planet) that we have one of the 3 Satellite Guys servers we use.

I have filed a complaint with the planet and have included the documentation as well as some of your comments on the matter.

With this being saidd we are sure that our server itself has not been compromised, instead it appears the SMTP port may have been monitored (again not sure of this but it is the best explination)

I knew it!

Thanks for the updates scott. I am glad to see Chaddux stuck to his guns on this as I got quite a few copies of that same spam today. Now my address isn't exclusive to satelliteguys, but it was suspicious when I saw it. I was blaming the other site though! :) just kidding.

See what happens when we're calm Chaddux? :D

Good to hear that our ISP is taking care of it.

I was calm for this entire thread. You made an assumption that I was not calm. Your assumption was in error.

More appropriate would be: See what happens when you ignore the unhelpful advice of Cascade telling me to "Get used to it?" If we had all just gotten used to it, the problem at ThePlanet.com would not have been discovered. :)

Not to flame, but I did get a complaint about you in PM from someone because of some of your comments.

My comments in this thread?

Yes, namely your critique on how a poster was typing.

No one is perfect.

That's because I couldn't read it. That has nothing to do with me being calm. Calmness and ability to read have no correlation whatsoever. It's just a fact: I couldn't read it. Just go take a look at what he was typing. Some of it is impossible to read. "I check the spam email and it isent from this same domin server there for it must have been comming from someware eles." What does that mean? It I sent from this same domain? Is he trying to say that he is the spammer that sent the email? He's arguing with me but I can't respond because I can't understand him. And if you look at his last reply, it's almost 100% perfect. If he can type that perfect, then obviously, he was just typing that bad for fun. If he was offended, he shouldn't have been playing games.

It wasn't a critique. I didn't correct him. I just pointed out that I couldn't understand any of it.

I say let it die, and not try to turn this against Chad now and admit it out loud that Chad was 1000% correct.

I TOO could not read 20% of what that poster was trying to type and he was trying to stonewall Chad's information as bunk.

He may not be perfect but he can darn well use the spell checker like the rest of us IF he want's to make a useful statement that we can understand. He got shown Chad's info and now he wants to turn it into Chad was being rude. Everyone should go back and read the ENTIRE thread, Chad was getting dumped on and remained true to his mission.

I say lets all move past this and thank you Chad & thank you Scott!

Lets all get back to the TV or our kids!
