Has everything to do with the "sale". Remember, in order for the entire deal to be tax-free, the value of Liberty's stake in NewsCorp must be exchanged for assets with an exact, matching value. Liberty's stake in NewsCorp is worth more than the DirecTV stock NewsCorp controls, so NewsCorp must provide additional assets to Liberty to make up the difference.

Even the article you link to says it is PART of the sale of DirecTV.

I'm shocked that Jim Basille hasn't tried to buy Fox Sports Pittsburgh off Rupert. The Penguins have always wanted their own Sports Network and now would be the time to buy Fox Sports Pittsburgh with Basille and his $Billion company Research In Motion (which makes the Blackberry handheld device) almost taking over the Penguins (should be finished this week or next about the time the Pennsylvania State Gaming Commision decides which Slot Proposal gets the License for the city of Pittsburgh December 20th). I still wouldn't be shocked if Basille tries to enter the picture quickly after he takesover the Penguins shortly and buys Fox Sports Pittsburgh from either Murdoch or Malone.
