....Today marks the 26th anniversary of his death, helping people that he barely knew. A man that gave so much to his fellow countrymen of Puerto Rico and the city of Pittsburgh. He was leader among black and hispanic ballplayers when they were considered in many ways, second class citizens for being men of color AND not having a solid grasp of the english language.

I will say with honor that I will forever be a fan and always admit without being embarrassment that he was and always will be, my hero.:up:bow:bow:bow

Descansa en paz, Momen!

I have some baseball books, and I have read a lot about Clemente's greatness, especially his 1966 MVP year and 1971 World Series performance.

As far as career is concerned, I think he is one of the greatest outfielders to ever play the game. I have some old real-to-real stuff my grandfather gave me of him in his prime....and all I can say is...WOW!

There was this GREAT PBS documentary about him where they interviewed some of the best pitchers of the 50s, 60s and he was considered one of THE most feared players in the game. Koufax and Gibson said they hated pitching to him because he hit EVERYTHING. There was 'no such thing as a bad pitch because would hit it well and hard somewhere....'

As far as the human being, think about this....what athlete would leave his family on New Year's Eve to help people he barely knows in another country....??

Considering today's professional athlete....ponder that question for a moment and let it sink it....

Actually the 36th anniversary of his death. I remember it well and it made a distinct impression on this little boy who found it hard to comprehend that such a great ballplayer at his prime could die. I recently read a very good biography about Clemente by David Moranis(?). He went into a lot of detail about the events surrounding his death, the plane he was on and the owner of the plane. A very good read about his entire life,IMO.

Damn ...my math SUCKS!!!! Good catch! About the book, I read it a little while back, you were close...it's David Maraniss. By far, one of the most detailed books ever written about Clemente.

Makes me proud to be a Pirates fan.:)

BTW...Salsa if you are going to Pittsburgh this summer, look at his statue, there is dirt in the base from Puerto Rico, Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium, it's a very nice statue.

I will be there later this year...I have been wanting to go to Pittsburgh for a baseball game for a very long time!

My condolences. ;)

I'll tell you what, HD. They may have sh!tty management and a AAA team playing, but after AT&T Park in San Francisco, PNC Park is the most beautiful ballpark in MLB. It's small and intimate with an old-fashioned feeling to it. You expect to see the men wearing straw hats and sports coats walikng around the stands. Both stadiums placed so perfectly along the waterfront with breatheaking scenery beyond the outfield. They did it right in Pittsburgh and SFO when it came to builing the ballpark.:up

I was sending my condolences for "wanting to go to Pittsburgh" period. I know they have a nice park. Just busting on Pitt. :)

What astounds me to this day is the way some of the old men who played with him (one HOF member especially) continue to carry such deep ill-feelings toward RC. During a rain dealy last season FOX ran an old tribute to RC and some of the interviews really blew me away!

It's like Camden Yards- a major-league stadium with a minor-league team.

Yes. They ALL, the ones that are still alive...still have this resentment that he actually faked half the injuries he had.

Plus in Maz's case it is plain flat out racial dislike. He does nothing to hide it either. I lost all respect fro Maz after viewing that program.
There was so much like that! Which makes me respect the none whites who played MLB back then! To put up with that crap and still be such good people! There were also some very good whites who also put up with alot of crap for being friends with them!
