Redskins name controvesy

And the fact that he compares a swastika to a confederate flag tells you everything you need to know about how ignorant he is.
slavery was legal under the confederate flag for 4 years (though the pictures St. Anthony's flag pictured was never the official flag), and legal under the Stars & Stripes for 85 years. hmm...
Plus the Nazi's genocide was a whole order of magnitude worse than slavery ever was under the USA or CSA.

Either way, it's a columnist with an agenda and no real literacy skill, so he has to resort to shock value.

Quite honesty, while I have my concerns about the Washington's name (as mentioned earlier), their logo is very respectable, and not a caricature like some other teams (ie. Cleveland Indians).

This current push is by the The Oneida Nation (Iroquois). It is they who are loudly protesting.

The Oneida Nation make up approximately .03% of the pure blooded Native American population. Assuming every member of the nation were protesting (not just the fat cats running the bingo and gasoline conglomerate)it would amount to about 1,000 people out of over 2.9 million.

Think back to the 1950s (or even present-day) "deep" south. They didn't mean anything by "Darkie" either.

Wow. Present day really????
You must think Gone With The Wind was made yesterday. The south is no different than any part of the country.

Uhhhh... No. :) Personal experience.... very recent personal experience. Rural Indiana and deep south, maybe. But no, not even close to the same. But now we are moving into Pit material.

Tony I really hate that you had such a bad experience here in the "deep south". To label it ONLY because you were in the rural Deep South is very narrow minded thinking. No disrespect intended. I appreciate the work you do here as a staff member but this thread never should have been put here in the Sports forum. It pertains to a sports team but the subject matter has NOTHING to do with sports at all. Thanks!!

Tigerfan,

I agree and disagree with you at the same time. Tony asked in the staff forum where he should post this thread and all the staff said here in the in the sports area. The reason I was one who voted for here is because it was Bob Costas who in the middle of a GAME came out with his feelings on the subject thus making it a sports topic.

I do think it was HIGHLY out of place for him to go off on his rant, but it is what it is and that's why the topic is here in the sports forum.

You use the term redskin to refer to an American Indian and think when you use it it's not a racial slur because you don't mean it? Really? Think back to the 1950s (or even present-day) "deep" south. They didn't mean anything by "Darkie" either.
Wasn't there a scandal way back when it was found out that over half the Indiana legislature members were Klan members (they even had a Klan Day at the State Fair)? Sorry, but it was never isolated to the South.

My last year living in Pennsylvania there was a huge thing about a Philadelphia suburb country club kicking out a day camp because members complained the camp was changing the "complexion" of the club, yes the day camp kids were black, and most club members were white.

But like I agreed with you earlier, the term Redskin has never been a good term, and as I said, just change back to the Braves and they can keep all the logos intact. The Atlanta Braves can't even complain about it, as Washington probably still owns the rights to a football team having that name.

Unfortunately it wasn't the first time for him to go off on a rant, and probably won't be the last.

I miss the days when announcers just announced the game. That's why whenever I watch a Braves/Bulldogs/Yellow Jackets/Falcons game I mute the TV and listen to the radio announcers instead.

I tried to do the same with my dvr. With that 7 second delay it's tough to get it timed just right.
