Did it! This was really bugging me, not being able to record videos from the Tube, with that fancy-schmancy dolby sound. Cost me about 5 dollars. Here's how I do it:
Using my Yamaha HTR5920's headphone jack, bought a Y-adapter plug from RadioShack, part 274-893. Leave the controls on it as usual for dvd-recording from satellite rec, except remove audio-in cables from back of dvd, replace those with the pair ran from the Y-adapter. Test recording plays great, and I don' care if its not 5.1, it IS stereo at least.
Just have to figure out how to hear it while its recording now lol, run another pair direct to the audio jacks on the tv input I guess.

going from you're FTA to the dvd recorder back into the tv? Because that should work..

the y adapters are nice if you want to split them between two different items (the tv and the dvd recorder)

This trick only works because once you plug in headphones on this home theater receiver, it cuts the dolby effects off and reverts back to 2ch stereo. They do not want us home users(read 'thieves') to be able to record anything with Dolby Digital off the air or satellite.

I'll have to try that on my Yamaha 5930.:)
