RE: [VOOM] Re: rain fade?
Look angle in Baltimore is actually higher than DirecTV's, if you want the
truth. The higher the look angle the less atmosphere the dish looks through
to the satellite that translates into less rain the dish has to look
through.
If the installer does his job well, true for Direct, Dish or Voom, then
you'll get more signal, typically from Voom than the other two currently and
should really have very little trouble with rain.
The DVR, as far as I know, also by the way, isn't in beta yet, so I don't
know how badly it could have performed.
Just so you know,
Wilt

Subject: [VOOM] Re: rain fade?
I am new to Voom with my installation set for the 8th of March.
Directv folks (who are trying to retain my membership with them are
saying all sorts of things about Voom)(folks in the retention
department). 1) that Voom has a weak signal due to 61.5 location of
satellite (they say too low). 2) they attack the HD programming as
just a bunch of old movies 3) that they have friends who say that
the Voom DVR has performed terribly in Beta tests.......yada yada
yada. I have still decided to join Voom despite hearing this. One of
the main reasons is the fact that all Directv receivers will soon be
obselete (at least the HD ones)when they switch to M-PEG4
broadcasts.
I must admit though, I am getting worried about this rain fade
issue. With Directv rain storms don't affect my signal unless it is
during the most severe 5-15 minutes of a severe thunderstorm. This
maybe 3-5 times per summer (almost never during fall or winter) and
never for more than 15 minutes. My question is, are there any Voom
customers in the Northeastern or mid-Atlantic US who have had to
switch to switch to this 24 inch Satellite due to rain fade or who
are suffering from severe outages of signal due to rain fade? I mean
when someone in this thread said that even drizzle causes outages I
am getting nervous. I am in Baltimore, MD. Should I go ahead with
the March 8th install? I really want to. Thanks!!!!
Wayne
