Primestar Dish on SG2100 ?

Pete, I setup my HH motor today and it all went very easy, except this.
I setup my true south positon and then went to AMC5, no problem. As I went to 110W, the dish signal went up on several spots along the way, but when it was done, I think a neighbors tree is in my way.

The main puzzle here is what were those satellites I was passing on the way to 110W from 79W. I went through the list of Sat's in my Lifetime Ultra and I could find them, yet I could see them as my dish rotated from 79 to 110. The default settings on many of the satellites is set to universal, instead of standard. Will I ever need anything else besides Standard for my LNB QPH-031?

I am either going to ask my neighbor to let me take the top off of his tree, or I am going to move my dish again.

So, what do you think those satellites are that I am pssing and not able to find? Can I enter Satellites of my own, if I can find where they are?

Maybe I do not have AMC5 as I think I do. I see Horse race tracks from NY, and NJ on a few of the channels. Many of the others have this mesage and music. "Trouble in River City? ...Call the TOC 435-797-0674 Another chanel says that you can have your message put on the screen and to send email to TOC@mdls.usu.edu

So, is this AMC5?

Thanks for your help. Joe

No, the satellite positions are stored in the receiver/motor using USALS or DiSEqc 1.2

Once you find your true south satellite ALL the satellites will be lined up as you travel east/west :)

Looks like you could just flip the primestar bracket mine looks like the holes would match up with no problems. many of the motors have a 50 mm tube to replace the smaller one, the elevation would be read backward but should work.

Its AMC 5 OK, between AMC-5 (79w) and 110........

I'm going to compare your list to what I shouw in my Lifetime. Can you give me the msot standard settings for frequency, LNB type, and how to scan them on the Lifetime Ultra. For instance, everybody talks about a blind scan, how does that translate to the Ultra? I see several types of scans, but blind scan doesn't look like any of them.

Oh, and the one problem I had a week ago, when I scanned Nimiq2, is still a problem. I just deleted Nimiq2 from my channles list. Certain channles cause the receiver to hand and reboot after about 20 or so seconds. Nimiq is the only satellite to do this to my receiver.

Thanks - Joe

One problem right off is that my receiver shows AMC-2 at 105.0w not 85.0w, and AMCAMC-15 , which you have and I don't, is listed as 105.0w, which is my AMC-2.

I don't understand why.

Also, can I edit the satellites, or add my own satellites on the Lifetime Ultra? Looking at the menus, it doesn't appear that I can do anything like that. It will let me delete satellites I don't want, but I didn't see where I could add any satellite of my own. BTW What can you get on XM-3? Is that XM radio?

Joe

Yes you can edit add delete satellite with the Ultra, its on page 26 of the manual.

Ok, found that.. I should have looked harder at the manual and less at the screens. I went to add XM-3 and some of the others that you have. Is there a dafault setting for frequency, and the other settings? I found this site to lok-up data on satellites http://isat.info They don't all show everything , but most of it's here.

I will add the ones that are missing. You didn't say anyting about the differences in what my Ultra shows and what you have for the same Satellites. I think it is odd, and I am more thinking along the lines that my receiver has old, or out dated information. Is this the case?

Joe

Question! I am currently fabricating a new mount for my primestar dish to mount to a motor. My question is, do I need to worry about being able to adjust the elevation on the dish and bracket when it is on a motor? Or does the motor already take care of the elevation as long as it is mounted on a level, square, and plumb mast?

Ziplock how is your set up holding up ? Is there anything you would do differently? bincitybandit how are you going to do your Primestar mount? I would enjoy hearing all your comments. Thanks, Mike

Well, I took the old mount off, bolted two 2" aluminum flats to the mount holes. Then i took the mount off of an 18" DTV dish, cut the LNB arm off, turned it upside down, and bolted it to the aluminum flats. The problem is that with the DTV mount upside down, I have no upward elevation adjustment. It is either pointing straight out, or at a downward angle. This is why I didn't major in engineering in college. That's I'm wondering if as long as the motor is mounted level, plumb, and square, will it work?

You need to build in the dish elevation/declination. The motor is set the same as your Latitude and if its moved you will never accurately follow the arc.

So you are saying that I should make the bracket so that I can adjust my elevation upward, right? Right now, stationary it is at around 36 degrees (off the top of my head) so that I can pick up G3C and IA8.

With the SG2100 that I use the Motor is set to 45 deg, then the dish is set at 24 deg. So 24 deg. is the angle I would have to built into the mount. Of course you are going to need some play, maybe +/- 10 deg. The motor elevation can never be changed, just the dish elevation up and down until you peak the signal quality.

O.K. I got the bracket finished. Like I said: Two 2" x 1/8" aluminum flat irons bolted to the back of the dish. Then I took the bracket off of an old DTV dish, cut the LNB arm off, and turned it upside down, and bolted it to the aluminum flat irons. The sticky part was that I had to take the mast insert out of the DTV bracket, turn it upside down again (so actually it is still right side up). To do this so that I could still have full elevation adjustment, I had to weld the carriage bolts to the outside of the top of the mast insert (so that the mast would still fit inside the mast insert). I think it should work, I won't know until I get my motor, which should be tomorrow. It was a different way to go about it than Ziploc, but like him, I removed 7 pounds from the weight of the dish. The Primestar bracket weighed at 9#, while mine weighed in at 2#. My theory is that I should just have to slide the dish onto the motor from the bottom and find my true south satellite. This shouldn't be much more difficult than finding satellites now, since I still have about 85% elevational adjustment with my bracket. Right?

Sounds right! Any way you can post pictures?

I'll do my best to make an attempt at it. I'm not much more familiar with computers than I am with FTA satellite. I'll try though.

I'm really looking forward to seeing them. Hans over at the other forum said he had used a bracket off of a Dish 500 something similar to what you have done . I keep debating over a SG2100 or a Stab120. I like to save some $'s get the SG2100( I don't know with or without the 50mm adaptor) . I know everyone here has had good luck with the SG2100. Shawn had good luck with his smaller Primestar dish and left the original mount on it with his SG2100. Thanks, Mike
