Price increases in February 2014 (UPDATED!)

I understand where Dee is coming from. I once had a really bad experience with one of the cars I owned...it turned out to be a lemon. So, I will never own a car again.

I forgot to add, that since auto manufactures are so careless in producing unreliable, dangerous products, I will not drive one or ride in one either.

Cox is same, HD is "free" but that HD set top costs $8.50 a month

If you have cable card with TiVo the charge is $2. My brother, parents, and sister all have Cox with a 6 tuner TiVo and 1 cable card. That with a couple TiVo minis for secondary TVs works well.

Question is that the rental fee for the box? If so then hd is free as you are paying a box fee. If you pay $8.50 and a $7.00 rental fee then yes hd is not free.

:facepalm

OK, if that's the way you want to look at it. It is the box lease fee, but how are you supposed to WATCH that FREE HD if you have to pay $8.50 to lease a box or $1.99 for a cable card? What's the point in having something, even if it is "FREE" if you can't actually use it.

Where do you think Dish got this stupid idea? All you needed was a free HD box and a sub to Dish to get HD channels, but now they will be just as bad a cable.

Hey we will give you "FREE" HD if you subscribe to our programming, but you will have to lease one of our boxes or cable cards to actually watch it or Hey we will give you a great "Free" HD receiver with your subscription but you can't watch any HD channels on it unless you pay us more for the HD versions of the channels you are already paying for.

Not very economical solution, what $900 to a $1k with a Roamio and couple mini's and lifetime sub, but it is an option. Maybe even an older gen Tivo and card, considering some of the outdated boxes and software some cable companies are still using. TIVO is about the only thing currently using cable cards, I haven't seen a tv with a cable card slot in quite a while.

Everyone is going to pay one way or another, I just get tired of all the marketing BS, to make it seem like you are getting something, that you're really not. Cox's website seems to change every few months, I have to dig to actually find the pricing and all they want to put on their info pages are the promo prices, takes some digging to find the actual price lists of what everything costs after the first few months and Dish and Directv aren't much better about disclosing things.

All my family mentioned above took the risk. It is about a 3 year payback in box fees verses owning with TiVo. I bought the 4 tuner TiVo that can do OTA for my situation. That way I can cancel all together if I decide to go antenna only!

Going back a page or two here,I checked with DIRT about going paperless/auto,to get rid of the $10 HD fee,I'm no contract/by the month/own everything, they said no. Only if I took a contract, could I get the fee waived.

Marketing is amazing. As long as people are gullible they keep putting out the most misleading ads that the law will allow. You can't really blame them because they have to our else they will just fall behind the competition. It's not different than any other business and it's a very ruthless world. The retail world is not as pleasant as everyone may think it is.

Do you have suggestions for a person with no cable TV, poor OTA and limited internet options?

Just got a big envelope in the mail from Dish. Dear valued customer and went on to say my core package will be increased by $5 in February. No mention of all the other increases. Also got a free pay-per-view movie.

Move to a civilized area! :p But, yes, Netflix is a godsend for someone in your situation. We were doing 3-dvd's out at a time before we subscribed to a pay-tv service, and it had nearly everything we could ask for.

How limited internet? Just low speed (i.e. 3mbit?), or only dialup/satellite? Apple TV and iTunes or Amazon VOD and TiVo. Of course both require you to buy the seasons/episodes, but both allow you to slowly download and they will buffer up the entire show/movie and let you then watch in HD without issues. This would be a solution for slow DSL, but it is still expensive if you want to watch a lot of new TV. Netflix by mail is really the only other alternative.

At least you can go back and forth between Dish and DIRECTV if you need a lot of channels all the time and get the new customer discounts for 2 years then switch.
