I'm not doubting you man. Sorry about some of the people that were being dicks. You were just trying to post what you had heard (hell we all love rumors around this place, that is part of the fun). This just happens to be one of the rumors that if true sucks. I rent alot of PPVs and really enjoy the fact that I can save them forever on my external hard drive. Either way (true or false) I appreciate you sharing what you heard from the inside and I hope that this didn't discourage you from posting in the future.

He would not have taken flak like he did in this thread if he had reported this in his initial posting as insider/rumor/undocumented possible action. HE DID NOT. Here is what he posted:

Not widely known yet, but the satellite industry is required under contract with movie studios to ERASE all the recorded PPVs on your DVR as of 2/1/08. That's correct - all saved shows on hard drives will be erased and any new PPV purchases will be viewable for only 24 hours and then erased. It affects Direct and Dish.. wait until customers get wind of this!!!

He claims it is under contract that this is REQUIRED to happen but no posting of any contract wording in part or in whole.

It's difficult for us "dicks" to give someone a break when they slap you in the face with absolutes but then later when taken to task about it claim it is unverifiable unless you are on the "inside".

AND, not one other "insider" has vouched for this statement.

Okay, I am amused. It is now February 21 and no one has posted anything in this thread since the D-Day of February 1. So, I guess it wasn't true? Or was it? Has anyone experienced any PPV erasures after 24 hours or not?

They still aren't going away after 24 hours. I've even archived some that are still working perfectly. Looks like it was totally false.

I had cable last year for a short period. When I 1st got the DVR it recorded HBO's shows "On Demand" with no problems. Shortly thereafter it would no longer record HBO's shows & flashed a message that said I had to use different connectors. HBO doesn't want us to record anything using the HDMI connector.

I changed to componant cables & it recorded the shows. HBO didn't want me recording in HD for what reason I don't know. I like HBO's programming & am a subscriber, but I totally dislike their GREED FACTOR. HBO was the 1st pay ch. to start charging C-Band customers. Now they're trying to keep us from recording anything from the DVR to a DVD recorder. With all the money HBO has it seems to me that they're real GREEDY a- h___s!

It's not good enough that they get pd. per subscriber. They can't bear the thought of someone recording shows that we already pd. for. I also dislike the copyright crap about not making any backup copies for personal use. All of them are greedy thugs who are NEVER satisfied. It's a shame.

Well, when that happens at Dish--and now I'm confident it will, I will NEVER purchase a PPV again. Ok, so maybe that will lead to some TP's being freed up. What REALLY upsets me is that if you look at the links in that post you'll find that HBO has decided to allow the current mini-series "John Adams" to only be viewed ONCE with the Tivo box, then it's automatically DELETED. When that happens with the Dish DVR's I will immediately cancel HBO!

Note that all of these are features of new PPV events... unlike the OP, no one is suggesting erasing events you already purchased without these conditions.

(And yes I agree that it is really dumb for Hollywood & HBO to implement these restrictions.)

It doesn't say that it will be retroactive, but it also doesn't say it won't. Once you've opened the door to any form of DRM whatsoever, there's no limit on what they might do.

I don't care since I never watch PPV, but I've long been saying that the PPV channels are a waste of bandwidth, so I would be glad if viewership drops to the point that they decide to get rid of them.

Well according to my bill next month all sd pay per views are going up to 4.99 and all hd pay per views are going up to 5.99 . So I won't be using them any longer. I haven't seen Directv go up on their pay per views. It really looks like DISH is trying to reclaim all the fee money they can since they are losing subs like crazy. At this rate we will be getting some new "because we can fees". Who knows a remote control usage fee? I am sure it will cost about 6.00 a month for an sd remote and 7.00 for an hd remote. THey are getting really ridiculous.

I have not read all 4 pages of this thread, just glanced at a few posts. I can tell you that on my SD Tivo I noticed something I never saw before. I have a Season Pass on most shows set to new only and 2 episodes.

I was looking for something to watch and looked on my 2nd DVR to see if there was anything good on there and it showed one episode of a series from Feb with a red circle, can't transfer flag due to copyright restrictions. Oddly there was a 2nd episode recorded in March with no such restrictions. Go figure!


So in fairness maybe the rumor was not entirely without any merit.
