I'm contemplating returning to Dish now that they've lowered the price of the HD-DVR to something reasonable....

I picked up a Samsung OTA receiver sometime ago and am using a Terk HDTVi in my attic (shooting through shingles and wood). Reception is generally very good and I get 100% on most channels. Occassionally I get 77%, then drop-out, then 77%, etc on one channel. If I move back to Dish, I'd likely want to get a "proper" antenna setup.

Does Dish sell and install a suitable antenna ?? I believe with D* you can pay extra and get one from them. I've searched here and found nothing that says Dish does this... If I missed it, sorry...

The peak of my home's roof is close to 30', not to mention that the roof itself is very steep. Me installing an antenna up there is pretty much out of the question.

I'm not aware of E* offering any OTA antennas but that doesn't mean that the installer wouldn't be some help to you. Find out who the installer will be and contact them directly for some advance advice on an OTA antenna installation to accompany the E* equipment. (Or call local installers yourself.)

Assuming you've been reading this subforum for a bit, you've seen a lot of experience and advice. Frankly, IIWU I'd independently make a tentative decision on a good antenna or two then have that discussion with the installer to bounce some ideas off his experience. If they don't have or won't deal with the equipment that you're hearing about in this subforum, maybe you can buy it yourself and still have the installer do the "roof" work for you, but in that case don't be surprised if they won't guarantee performance.

Incidentally - it's likely that an installer won't go onto that roof either. For the dish installation there are many options closer to the ground, but that may not be the case with an OTA antenna. Do you have any other options other than the roof? BRgds...

I prefer dealing directly with Dish and not a reseller. As for a seperate antenna installation, I've seen prices thrown around in the hundreds of dollars and I'm not interested in that....

I certainly wouldn't be against buying an antenna and paying the Dish installer (on the side) to mount it. It would probably be "Digital Dish" doing the work.

When I had Dish previously, I had no desire to have the SUPERDISH mounted on my roof (25-30ft up) or even on my porch roof. It was in the backyard, mounted in the ground. That was a couple of years ago and back then, tree growth (neighbor's trees) was close to being a problem. Those trees have certainly grown since then so I suspect the previous location wouldn't work today. Even then, my LOS was a narrow window between the trees and the house. With the newer 1000 dish, I don't think mounting it on my front porch roof is out of the question. I'm not sure if that's high enough for an OTA antenna though. If it were, I could mount that myself.
