"30 years ago this week, the freighter "Edmund Fitzgerald" left Superior, Wisconsin, headed for Cleveland. But the ship encountered a powerful storm and sank in Lake Superior. All 29 crew members were lost..."

A good read on that day: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wxwise/fitz.html

The local action news (cleveland) was doing some story about something in the water down there with the ship but I didn't care to watch. They make up so much stuff during sweeps it's absurd. Hot anchors but it's just not worth it...

I was living near Cleveland when it happened and remember it well. I later moved to Northern Michigan. I have driven past Whitefish Point many times and you get kind of an eerie feeling. I believe Discovery Channel had a documentary on this which I found very interesting.
