I did what I should have done before asking the question: I Googled it.
I found several theories about what causes the static pop when changing channels, so in the end there really isn't ONE answer: Nobody really knows because there are so many variables.
It hasn't been popping today.
I wish I could have just deleted the question, but I couldn't so I just said I found the answer...
