Nimiq 5 Launch Scheduled for September 18

Don't get excited yet.... it's at its testing location right now. Looks like everything is moving along fine to be completely converted by 10/15 to 8PSK.

Thanks nelson61 and digiblur for the continuing updates. This schedule will fit in nicely with the Charlie Chat next week. Charlie should have a significant segment devoted to the new capacity and what it means for both local and national HD coverage.

Regards,
Fitzie

I am a bit surprised that Dish has not filed anything regarding moving the E-6 satellite to another slot e.g. 61.5 W. I hope the issue with knowing the amount of propellant on the satellite is not holding this up but it seems odd that Dish would just leave E-6 at 72.7 W.

"Should" is a lovely word. Seemingly full of hope, too........

Is it possible they already applied in Canada and we do not know yet? It seems like since it is a "Canadian" satellite now, they would have to ask Canada first...

I am sure Dish would have to coordinate moving E-6 elsewhere with both the Canadians and the FCC but the FCC process almost always takes much longer. If E-6 is going to be used for service in the U.S. from another slot then Dish needs approval from the FCC. Prior to the Nimiq 5 launch, Dish filed an application with the FCC to communicate with it during orbital circularization with its ground stations so it appears the authority of the FCC is quite broad.

navychop, you are quite right. Based on the latest reports of movement of Nimiq 5, the satellite "should" be in place by the time of the Charlie Chat. If past history is an indicator, Charlie "will" discuss the implications for HD programming in some detail on the next Chat...but we can't be sure until it happens.:)

Best regards,

He will probably say that new HD will be coming soon but won't say what channels they are and that will be the end of it.

Charlie has been known to throw channel logos up on the screen of up coming channels. Don't be surprised if he is in a throwing mood on Monday.

So I moved over the weekend
