NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly didn't even spin the futility of the past two days in his statement: "(The) mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time."

PA chief Don Fehr's statement didn't add anything beyond, "the mediators indicated they ... would call the parties back together when they thought the time was right.”

This is getting ridiculous and they need to be locked in a room and not let out till they come to an agreement :)

Word is slithering about that the season will be cancelled by the end of this week if nothing else can be accomplished. At this point....who cares?

If that happens ..... will they continue to get together for talks, or sit back and wait till October to see about playing NEXT year ?

I see the owners having the upper hand in this matter with the average household income down 8.2% ($4500) in recent years...and people are spending far less than that on tickets and fan items. Here is a look at NHL salaries the past few years:

2010-11: $2.40 million
2008-09: $1.90 million
2005-06: $1.46 million.
2003-04: $1.83 million.
1997-98: $1.17 million.
1994-95: $572,000.
1990-91: $271,000.

You mean I can HAVE another $ 4500 dollars if the economy picks up :)

Compared to other sports, 2M the players are avg. is NOTHING.

The NHL is on par with MBL considering they play half the games (season is just as long) so they sell less tickets and broadcast time. The NFL appears to be underpaid...until you consider they only play 16 games and 3X the number of players. The NBA is unbelievable and another reason I don't follow them. I've yet to see more than a handful of players who are worthy of 1M per years. I haven't shot hoops in years and, if I wasn't old and still had knees, there is no doubt I could out play a quarter of the league...and hit more than 85% of my free throws.

Anyway, back at the ranch...Bettman will have no choice but to cancel the season before Christmas.

NBA - $5.15 million
MLB - $3.31 million
NHL - $2.4 million
NFL - $1.9 million
