i will say that i am not too happy with the commissioner because of the way he's handled this referee issue. so unnecessary. the sloppy way he's handled bounty gate has turned me off as well, but to say i hate the guy is an extreme. i've liked the way he's handled some things in the past but, again for the moment not so much.

This is what a reasonable opinion looks like.

Like Goodell or not he has changed the game and,imo for the worse. He has skewed the game so much towards the offense all kind of records have been broken.I always think back to the statement Ray Lewis made about Brady, might as well have a skirt on lol.

Well... you can blame that more on the "competition committee" ...which of course, is comprised of owners. More offense generates more excitment which generates more a$$e$ in seats which generates more $$$$$. A vicious cycle that circles around ONE thing...CHA-CHING! The owners disguise it as doing it for the fans but in reality, they are doing it for the "cash money Homie"...LOL!

i actually like more offense. no issues here with that. like salsa said it puts more asses in the seats. the only thing i don't agree with is over protecting the QB which is one of the results from wanting more offense in the league

Rey Lewis can go to hell, his thug buddy Suggs dove right for Brady's knee. It was dirty.

What rule has been changed in the last 20 years that has to do with the passing game? Illegal contact became a rule in the late 70's. Holding and PI have been the same since I've been watching football.

The problem is that defenders no longer know how to form tackle, instead they'd rather launch themselves at heads and knees. Learn to execute a proper tackle and stop bitching.

at the very least 20 years ago you could have way more contact against receivers and qb's. just ask marino, elway, montana, sims, theisman and other qb's. wr's as well. its why more yds and td's are being generated per season. its easier for today's offenses than years past. i do agree with your point on the tackling. a good example of a team that knows how to tackle very well are the 49ers. i noticed that throughout last week's game and enjoyed it very much.

So facts don't matter, you just hate the guy and anything he does, got it. You aren't basing any of your replies in reality, you know that right?

I don't hate the guy,I don't like a lot of what he's done. The NFL had a chance to send a message about Bountygate, but Goodell's arrogance botched that up with the player suspensions. Again,it just doesn't make any sense with the referee lockout. All of the refs are supposed to be part-time employees. They supposedly have far better full time jobs & this is just a hobby with them calling the games. So why lock them out? Roger Goodell is the face behind this issue & he is the one who comes out looking like the bad guy. Even though the league is run by the NFL owners, the buck stops with Goodell.

On another note.........(changing the subject)

Vince Young broke, details why sketchy
http://sports.yahoo.com/sportsminute

'Cuz he's a dumbass??????

And a poor quality QB???

yes and yes...... i'll never understand these players that go broke once they're out of the league after making millions. such poor management of their $$$$...........

BUT...again referring to Bountygate,Goodell's suspension of the coaches was spot on. The Saints so far seem to be reeling from the effects of that & that is the right message to send to other teams.

From the neck up,Vince Young is probably one of the worse QB's who ever played the game. I think people would forgive him if he said he had a substance abuse problem, then people could blame all of his problems on the drugs or alcohol.

Yet, you constantly suggest for teams to pick him up............

I wanted to believe he could change. Sadly he's poisoned the well with his attitude & I'm not sure any team,NFL,CFL,UFL(if they still exist),or Arena Football League, would feel that they are in that desperate need of a QB to pick him up. If a "D-League" Indoor Football League can cut Terrell Owens, what chance does VY have?

Nothing about being arrogant messed up the suspensions. It was successfully appealed because the appeals board couldn't tell what was a salary cap violation and what was for conduct detrimental. Things like covering up the program for 3 years, lying to investigators, and some parts of the participation can be penalized by the commissioner. They've certainly fumbled a few things with it and lost some PR battles, but make no mistake the players will be suspended again, and could then face even more punishment if the salary cap violations are then sent to a special master for resolution. The real irony will be if they somehow face more punishment because of the appeals process. Fujita has been injured, Vilma is out until at least week 6, Hargrove doesn't even have a job. Though for a couple of them that haven't played, wouldn't be surprised to see them get a time served and fined game checks... would be a nice concession.

Some people seem to think that because things like the Favre bounty is in doubt, the 3 years of coverups, the outright confession of Fujita that he paid players for things like sacks... none of that suddenly matters or counts?

As for the referees, you just made the case the NFL has. You clearly don't understand why they are even locked out. They want the NFL to take the risk with their retirement and garantee pension payouts, unlike what most employers now do and allow employees control (and take the burden of risk) of their retirement. So if the market goes down, your 401k investment choices are your own. The referees have now conceeded in the form of a open letter yesterday and asked that current officials be grandfathered and new officials get the new type of system. Basically saying screw you to anyone who's new. In short, the officials are asking for better benefits than many full time employees, in the NFL and elsewhere.

They officials also don't want to agree to any of the measures the NFL wants to implement to make officiating better. They want to hire a number of full time officials to work year round to improve the consistency of calls. They also want to hire another set of officials to act as a bench that they can go to when a group of officials performs poorly.

But hey "why lock them out" because "supposedly have far better full time jobs & this is just a hobby" - well Goodell is putting the game before their part time jobs. The officials are pointing to the $9b in revenue the NFL rakes in as a reason to give them whatever they want... but if every decision was guided by how big the stack of money is without any other context, the stack will one day be smaller than you expect it to be, if it's not gone altogether.

I know some people around here 'greatly dislike' Goodell, but just flinging the mud without any obvious content means your flinging something worse than mud, and reflects more on you than who you are trying to fling it on. Goodell hasn't been perfect, but he's also done a lot of good for the league in a particularly rough stretch.

Spoken like a true Brady fan lol..Don't get me wrong I really don't like Lewis either, the point still remains that the QB has way more protection than ever before. Two years ago as an instance of this dumb rule,Trent Cole's pinky finger raked the side of Manning's helmet,oh no personal foul, roughing the passer! In essence they should have a skirt on compared to yrs ago.Brady and Manning are two of the most protected Qb's in history.Even the most casual NFL fan knows that the game is skewed towards the QB and offense.I don't like the kickoff from the 35yd line either. They almost killed the the most exciting play in football. And,you can't blame it all on the competition committee Goodell is the very one that proposed most of these changes. Now with all that said I'm all for player safety but, when it starts ruining how the game is played that bothers me.In years past you could have a true shutdown corner,in today's game no way possible.

They've declined to protect them further though, the Steelers wanted it to be illegal to horse collar a QB in the pocket and were denied.

Whether Goodell suggests them or not (I am pretty sure he didn't - most recommendations come from the clubs), they still have to get past the committee and then ratified by the teams, OK'd by the union.

I wonder if replacement refs would call that pinky finger roughing penalty ;)
