I don't hate the guy,I don't like a lot of what he's done. The NFL had a chance to send a message about Bountygate, but Goodell's arrogance botched that up with the player suspensions. Again,it just doesn't make any sense with the referee lockout. All of the refs are supposed to be part-time employees. They supposedly have far better full time jobs & this is just a hobby with them calling the games. So why lock them out? Roger Goodell is the face behind this issue & he is the one who comes out looking like the bad guy. Even though the league is run by the NFL owners, the buck stops with Goodell.
Nothing about being arrogant messed up the suspensions. It was successfully appealed because the appeals board couldn't tell what was a salary cap violation and what was for conduct detrimental. Things like covering up the program for 3 years, lying to investigators, and some parts of the participation can be penalized by the commissioner. They've certainly fumbled a few things with it and lost some PR battles, but make no mistake the players will be suspended again, and could then face even more punishment if the salary cap violations are then sent to a special master for resolution. The real irony will be if they somehow face more punishment because of the appeals process. Fujita has been injured, Vilma is out until at least week 6, Hargrove doesn't even have a job. Though for a couple of them that haven't played, wouldn't be surprised to see them get a time served and fined game checks... would be a nice concession.
Some people seem to think that because things like the Favre bounty is in doubt, the 3 years of coverups, the outright confession of Fujita that he paid players for things like sacks... none of that suddenly matters or counts?
As for the referees, you just made the case the NFL has. You clearly don't understand why they are even locked out. They want the NFL to take the risk with their retirement and garantee pension payouts, unlike what most employers now do and allow employees control (and take the burden of risk) of their retirement. So if the market goes down, your 401k investment choices are your own. The referees have now conceeded in the form of a open letter yesterday and asked that current officials be grandfathered and new officials get the new type of system. Basically saying screw you to anyone who's new.
In short, the officials are asking for better benefits than many full time employees, in the NFL and elsewhere.
They officials also don't want to agree to any of the measures the NFL wants to implement to make officiating better. They want to hire a number of full time officials to work year round to improve the consistency of calls. They also want to hire another set of officials to act as a bench that they can go to when a group of officials performs poorly.
But hey "why lock them out" because "supposedly have far better full time jobs & this is just a hobby" - well Goodell is putting the game before their part time jobs. The officials are pointing to the $9b in revenue the NFL rakes in as a reason to give them whatever they want... but if every decision was guided by how big the stack of money is without any other context, the stack will one day be smaller than you expect it to be, if it's not gone altogether.
I know some people around here 'greatly dislike' Goodell, but just flinging the mud without any obvious content means your flinging something worse than mud, and reflects more on you than who you are trying to fling it on. Goodell hasn't been perfect, but he's also done a lot of good for the league in a particularly rough stretch.
