New install: Installer did not bond 2 ground rods

Hi. I just had a new directv install. The installer would not bond the 2 ground rods because the cable I ran was not certified as ground wire. The cable is stranded copper 8 gauge insulated wire about 130 ft long. I know NEC is 6 gauge but none is better than nothing. .

The installer also said he has seen more problems when the 2 ground rods are bonded together.

Should I go ahead and bond the 2 ground rods per NEC?

I know that the length of the wire and gauge is not what it should be but I was thinking that it would equalize low voltages if they do occur.

Before I hook the bond wire should I use a volt meter to check to see if there is any natural potential voltage ?

Just bond it.
They make those connectors for a reason.
