I am a new DTV customer and am thinking of buying a second standard DVR for my home. The question is can just swap the card off my existing receiver and put it in the new DVR and have it work or do I have to do something else? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

No, you cannot simply swap the card. If your receiver is leased (likely if you are a new DIRECTV customer), you'll have to return the card with it when you deactivate it.

Are you thinking of upgrading or buying used?

Things on e-bay mat not be what they say they are. Most of the DVR's are leased unites. Your best bet might be to get one stright from D* or a local store like best buy, pluse you will need two cables run to the new unit. So be carefull on what you decide to do.

Only one cable needed if he has an SWM installation.
DirecTV will supply whatever is needed, be it SWM or not
However, if you only have one DVR at the time of the install, they will most likely put up a standard AU9 dish and only run two coax cables. In order to add the second DVR you need two more lines, so make sure the installer runs four lines from the dish regardless of current need.

You've suffered one of the major oversights of new customers: you shot too low.

More often than not, the more equipment you get when you sign up, the better. DIRECTV won't likely give you much consideration on upgrades for 6 months to a year.

Here's a tip: don't buy any DirecTV receivers from eBay. You'll save yourself endless amounts of heartache
