i know you need a phone line to recieve updates. how often do you actually need the line to be connected? The reason i ask is that the closest working phone line is in a different room than my tv. I eventually will run a line to the tv, but in the mean time, if i only need it hooked up ocassionaly, i can run a long cord to the reciever whenever it's needed. Is this something where I'll know when I need it hooked up? I know i read something about them doing checks to make sure you're hooked up to a phone line.

I was in the same boat as you. My nearest phone line was 50 ft away - so what I did was buy one of those RCA wireless phone jacks on Ebay. You plug a phone line into one and plug it into an AC socket. The other wireless jack you plug into an AC socket near your receiver. It can then make its calls nightly and you save the $5 charge and the hassle. Brand new they run about $40... I bought mine used on Ebay for $14 + 5 shipping... works like a charm.

good idea...didn't think about that. it would save me the hassle of running a new line...although it would be a project to keep me busy...not that i'm not already busy enough :)

aliaga61, You don't need a phone line to receive updates, all software and guide updates are sent via satellite. On a 522 Dish will charge a $5 fee if you don't have it connected to a phone line. I've used the wireless RCA jacks before with no problems.

To clarify, if the 522 is not your only receiver, there will be a $4.99/month fee charged for tuner 1. Tuner 2, considered a separate receiver for billing purposes, will also have a $4.99/fee which is waived if continually connected to a phone line. The fee for tuner 1 is not waived, regardless of a phone line.

From my understanding the phone line is only good for pay per view. Now that I think about it, why are we charged if our receiver is not hooked up to the phone line. It actually makes zero sense.

Yup - E* is worried about all those single 322 or 522 customers sawing their box in half so the second tuner can go to the brother-in-law's house.

You're just as wrong as your presidential candidate. For DHA (under which nearly all 322's and 522's are activated), there are three different add-on fees in the $5 range:
* A $5/month "rental" fee applies to each receiver (NOT tuner) after the first one; it is NOT waived for connection to a phone line. (It's technically charged for the first receiver too, but that's included in the package price.)
* A $4.99/month "additional programming" fee ALSO applies to the second tuner in a 322 or 522; it is waived if the receiver is "continuously connected to the same phone line". It applies to ALL x22's, including the first receiver; it is NOT included in the advertised price.
* And, of course, the $4.98 DVR fee for the 522--which is also per receiver, NOT tuner.

The confusion may arise from the fact that Free-For-All (and I believe Free Dish too) charge a fee per extra receiver that is the same amount ($4.99) and name ("additional programming") as the DHA/x22 second-tuner fee. However, that fee really parallels the DHA $5 "rental" fee.

My question now is, will SBC Dish try to stick me with the $4.99 fee this month because my home phone line was out earlier this week? On the one hand, in effect SBC would be charging me for their own phone outage. On the other, SBC should be able to confirm the outage and credit the fee. Which way will it be?

You guys both said the same thing...

Anyway to answer your question. If they catch it they will charge you. And while yes your bills are consolidated. The reciever calls dish who tells SBC what to charge. If you have a problem with your dish service they redirect you to the 1800333dish number which will troubleshoot your install/setup.

That said they probably wont catch you. if you get billed for it... call them and they will credit your next bill... yes you will still have to pay it but your next bill will be 5 lighter.

I have a voip line hooked up to the 522 and it never seems to be able to transfer data to Dish Network. In fact, it just ties up my phone line and puts it out of operation. I am not goiing to pay $5.00 a month extra for some modem glitch of Dish Network. I see it as an invasion or privacy anyway. If I want PPV, I will call the 800 number and order it myself!

How likely is it that they will charge the $5.00 fee? Can I just plug it in once a month or so?

First its not an invasion of privacy because when signed the paperwork you agreed to keep it attached to a phone line.

That aside dish does the phone thing for 2 resons
1- to get ppv orders when ordered via remote.
2- so that they can make sure all receivers are at the same location

If left unconnected you will be audited (some what frequently recently)
You will also be charged the 5 dollar fee because that is part of the agreement withthe dual tuner dual tv receivers.

a trick that most people have tried with sucess is to hook a dsl filter up in reverse to the 522. then it dials out sucessfully and there isnt much to worry about then.

in your case it cant. alot of people have more than one reciever. E* also wants you to pay for an RV account if say you took it to your brotehr in laws. they want to make sure its at your physical location as well. its just E* being uptight.

Hi. My 522 receiver will not dial out either. It says the phone line is connected in diagnostics, but the dial out test fails. I have read about the DSL Filter installed in reverse. What exactly does that mean. I do have DSL and have my receiver plugged into this, but a land phone dials out from this same location. Please help.

Anyway to delete History on DVR 625?
