NBA Lockout thread

The NBA union has come out and made a point to say all players are unified. That's usually the first sign that they are not. ;)

Kobe Bryant is prepared to loan players money during a long lockout

By Eric Freeman

We've heard several times over the past few months that many NBA players live paycheck to paycheck, a state of affairs that undermines the conception that they're all overpaid children. It's amazing how expenses can pile up for young men with tons of new responsibilities.

Depending on who you ask, this lockout may last many more months. If that happens, many of these paycheck-to-paycheck players may need some financial help. The good news is that several union members are prepared to lend a helping hand, including one of the league's titans. From Lance Pugmire's interview with Billy Hunter for the Los Angeles Times (via EOB):

What role will NBA superstars like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James play as this moves forward?

"They've been deeply involved in the meetings we've had. I know Kobe is intimately involved in interfacing with colleagues and sharing in a pool of revenue to help the others get through this. Kobe has volunteered to do that in the event others need, he and others are prepared to loan money if necessary."

Congrats to Hunter for engaging in serious corporate-speak by using "interfacing with colleagues" when he means "having conversations." He is certainly proving that he deserves to hold on to his job as union leader whether decertification happens or not. Not everyone understands business culture that well.

The story here is odd for a few reasons. First, we've been conditioned to think that highly paid athletes are greedy egotists, not people that would help their peers when in need. Second, that's especially true of Bryant, who has been called a ballhog and teammate-freezer-outer since shortly after he entered the league as a prep star in 1996. While Kobe isn't typically discussed as a guy with many friends around the league, it's nice to see him going to bat for other athletes now.

Then again, for all we know he'll charge obscene interest rates and cut the knee ligaments of anyone who doesn't pay him back. The man would be a terrific loan shark. He'd even have a signature maiming: manipulating the jaw into a permanent underbite.

Here is where we stand right now...

Last year players received 57% of revenue with a soft cap. Players are proposing lowering that to 53% with a soft cap. Owners are proposing 50% with a hard cap.

Unfortunately while each side is scheduled to meet this week, there are no negotiations scheduled at this time between the two sides.

This does not look good.

I have no sympathy for those players living paycheck to paycheck, sorry.

According to Chris Broussard on Twitter,

Some Big-market owners are the biggest hawks on the hard cap b/c if they're going to have to share revenue, they want to make more $...

I'm starting to think NBA reg season COULD (no guarantee) start on time & only preseason games will be missed...still hard to tell though

Chris_Broussard Chris Broussard
Big-market owners will be the ones sharing revenue, but they don't want to share their current profits. So they want a hard cap to make....

Chris_Broussard Chris Broussard
Big markets want hard cap to make x-tra $ so they can use the x-tra $ for revenue sharing. Hear they also want rev sharing delayed a yr or 2

Chris_Broussard Chris Broussard
Some want hard cap for rev sharing purposes. Others so they can't be outspent by opponents. Others to protect self from giving bad contracts

There will be owners who differ with each other regarding what settlement should be reached, and also players who differ with each other as well. That's how negotiations work. When you have to wear shirts that say 'Unified' to tell everyone you're unified...you're probably not unified.

Those player maybe supporting a ton of family members. Not just wife and kids....cannot assume things without knowing what they are doing with their money.

Sorry still nothing. The league min goes a long way even if they have 20 family members to feed.

That's their choice. If player X is struggling to take care of their immediate family, they need to step up and tell their leech cousins to stop being beggers and get a job of their own.

Easier said than done. But I am gonna assume you know this because you have experienced it yourself.

This is getting way off track. This isn't socialist Cuba, people are not paid based on need.

Players are paid extremely well now, and will be in the future no matter how this is settled. What they do with those wages is up to them.

I agree. But again, what their responsibilities are...we do not know and we cannot assume. And I will leave it at that.

With that said, I still think they will be playing meaningful games in November. Someone will cave in.

I hope so. The rhetoric coming out of both sides says otherwise...but I hope so.

I will say one thing...if the players association needs something to happen with 0.4 seconds left in the negotiations to save the season...they have the right guy leading them!

I have a strange feeling that IF the players gave up some of the 57% gross they take from revenue right off the top....this will be settle quickly. I think it has less to do hard caps than revenue.

Maybe. It sounds like the owners REALLY want a hard cap. Then again, it's difficult to tell either way, because neither side is going to reveal their true line in the sand. And that line in the sand tends to get wiped out by the tide and redrawn a number of times during negotiations anyway.

Full negotiations scheduled for today in New York. Let's hope for the best.
