NBA Lockout thread

OK... you are right. The excuse for every single impasse between employer and employee in more than likely the history of labor can be used.

I agree.....

I agree too. The biggest difference is the amount of revenue on the table. NBA revenue is not in the same stratosphere as NFL revenue. T

That's what sets these situations apart.

Bingo! The other comparison mean nothing because the same thing can be said about a teachers strike, pilot's strike and a bus drivers strike.

Got it. You don't want to talk about it. Cool.

Some of us like to compare the NFL and NBA situations, and will continue to do so even if you don't. ;)

Not sure if any new negotiations are scheduled this week. This is not a good sign, as the two sides should be working hard right now...or at least give the appearance that they're working hard...to save the beginning of the season.

I would think having former players become owners would be a nightmare for the old guard in the NBA. Jordan remembers how cheap "Crums" use to be to him and the rest of the Chicago Bulls. Hell, I would remember talk of "winning inspite of ownership" in Chicago during their hayday.

Crossposting this from the NFL thread since more relevant conversation could probably be had here... but interesting contrast between the NFL and NBA TV rights:

From an awesome sports law guy I follow on Twitter: Twitter

The Hornets got $41.2M in total broadcast revenue (nat'l + local tv + radio) in 2009. The Saints will get $59.3M per yr from new MNF deal

Also from him: Some cross-league perspective. NFL will get $1.9B per year for 1 gm per week. NBA gets $930M per year for its entire national tv deal.

Yeah but, does that include the revenue from all the Lebron James Jerseys sold in Taiwan?

Jeez, bad news, things seem to have gotten worse after yesterday's meetings, and no new negotiations are scheduled right now. :(

One of the major issues is the hard salary cap...the owners want one, the players don't. The players want to keep the current soft cap that has mid-level exceptions, etc., and luxury tax for teams that go over the cap. The owners want a hard cap that is similar to the NHL and NFL, that you cannot go over, period.

The NHL players sat out an entire year, and still wound up with a hard cap. Let's see what happens here. Disappointing.

Sounds like it's time for basketball players to start revving up their passports. Overseas basketball beckons...

Lots of NHL players did this in 2006.
