Monday August 14th Technical Chat

What's up with linking to ImageShack? Is Scott running low on storage space on the new server? I don't think we should have to "sign" some usage agreement to see the slides from tonight's Tech Chat. Just my opinion...

Thanks, dfergie, you typing this all in as I missed out on the chat.

Myy Syntax LT32HVE has a DVI port, and the HDMI output on the 622 only works right half of the time. So it isn't just the hardware. My connector/Cable is without a flaw.

What they need to do to fix the HDMI connector is either put in 2 snap in connectors, one on each side, or use the screw method like with a DB15 connector.
Who is "they", Dish Network ?? If so, you'd have to buy a "special" Dish HDMI connector or cable.... No thanks.

It was the only way I could insert the image where it belonged,(unless I did a Word doc or a Pdf) I was going to post attachments to my first post but I accidentally murdered it dead... I did not realize it would not appear immediately to you...

It's only an issue 'cause I'm using my work PC right now. I try not to load anything that isn't "approved" by IT...

BTW, here's the URL I get when I try to click on the image with the Dish'n it UP ViP 622 slide:
Code:
http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N3493.ValueClick/B1965841;sz=300x250;click=http://media.fastclick.net/w/click.here?cid=55744&mid=110325&sid=20143&m=6&c=0&forced_click=;ord=20060815030531?
Most of those sites are blocked by the proxy/firewall I go through.

I do think they shrugged off the InHD and FoodHD question.
This is somewhat typical in the broadcast industry, I'd guess. My local cableco has or had (2) local channels "ready" to go once a contract was reached. The channels weren't available in the program guide, nor could you tune to the channel directly, but if the box was in DIAG mode, you could key in the channel number and there was the digital feed. The engineering side of Dish could have been told "we're working on an agreement to carry channels 'a' and 'b' ", so they get things ready. It by no means that an agreement will be reached.

On another topic, the answer for OTA channels - ones not carried by Dish - was answered incorrectly. He stated they do populate the guide data "for channels they carry", but that's not what was asked. Either he misunderstood the question or Dish is at least considering using PSIP data to fill in those sub-channels.

No, I mean the industry as a whole. Sure it will require new connectors and cables, but at least we wouldn't have this problem.

HDMI aren't the only connectors to cause the surface-mount jacks to fail. We had a rash of users with ThinkPad A-, T-, and R-series that needed their power jacks replaced because the flexing of the power cable caused the soldier joints to fail. I like Apple's magnetic lock on their power connector to "pulls the plug" when too much stress is applied.

I posted in one of the threads on the ViP622's HDMI failures about an HDMI cable that comes with a clip and matching screw that helps lock the HDMI cable to your equipment.

you don't have to sign an image to view it.

I think I know what happenend, you clicked on the picture expecting to see it bigger, but once you get to the site you're viewing it's original size, so when you clicked on the image you were taken back to the homepage to where you can upload your own images

BFG, I believe you're right. I expected the images to be easier to read if they were larger.

Nice recap. Thanks! The content was so-so but wow, a lot of good answers came from really good questions. They revealed a lot of previously unreleased info, like the D1000.2, 622 getting a new HDD, bugs with the HDMI connector, and etc. There's a Retailer Chat tomorrow so let's see if they reveal some more. :D

I believe you can use the User Gallery for the screen caps. Here's one from my collection:

I'm curious to see how this works...

:( Hmmm, not very well... Maybe this is better:

Thanks, sorry about the 2 pages of posts that I killed:rolleyes: folks...(and 431 views)

During the chat they said "we are working on the external hard drive... that will be out this fall"

His wording leads me to believe this will be a propriteary device you would have to buy from Dish (his reference to "the hard drive"), as opposed to support for generic external USB drives that you could just buy off the shelf anywhere.

I hope they don't force us to buy a proprietary (expensive) device!
Am I reading to much into the way he worded this?
In a recent thread here there was speculation but I don't recall seeing anything definitive...

That is definitely a possibility, but my gut says they are working on developing a way to encrypt the files so you can't just copy from the hard drive to a pc. At least that's my hope. With finger's crossed ...

This is the best recap that I have seen so far. Good job!!! The reason why I say that is due to the fact that it comes with the pictures and all, kind of wraps it up real quickly. Those DVR's (and capture devices) do come in handy dont they?

Power Outage?
