It may take slightly longer because NBA arenas seat more than NHL arenas, but the MLS is still POISED to overtake the NBA as well. Does that make the MLS more popular than the NBA?

It's really a non-statement for both the NHL and the NBA. The ratings prove that.

Only for clarity, which is why I originally used the word "bet" over anything implying fact based.

My question to you -

Why can't they follow the local MLS team AS WELL AS other leagues? You are excluding one for the other. They are not mutually exclusive.

Who says they can't? The only thing I observe is that they don't. During the World Cup go to a Dodgers game and you will see much more Mexico jerseys than US jerseys. During this time you may actually see more Mexico jersey's than Raiders or Lakers jersey's

That doesn't matter. The average attendance is higher. There is no ignoring, because you can't ignore what doesn't exist.

You guys are playing the straw game adding the what ifs......and the but, but, buts........


Popularity is a subjective issue, sure, but butts in the seats are a hard fact.

The NASCAR attendance average is higher than the NFL. So, is NASCAR more popular than the NFL??

Heck, I've even been to a game because the Home Depot Center is right around the corner from my sister and the tickets were free. My sister and her family go often because they often get cheep or free tickets and they don't care for soccer all that much either. They just go to simply get outside, watch an event, eat some food, and enjoy family time

Good point, what's the ticket price differential between Hockey & Soccer. I bet a hockey ticket is much more expensive.

Number of games in a season does make a big difference. With baseball, people seldom go to every game, just too many of them. Football on the other hand, with only 8 home games, easy to go to all of them.

With hockey having twice as many games as soccer, it would be twice as hard to get people to come to every game. And again, the price of tickets plays a big part too.

That was my fault for stating this is comparing soccer to hockey. I should have stated this is comparing the MLS to the NHL (and NBA).

First off - I will agree that the NHL brings in more money than MLS, I have no facts, but also no doubt in my mind. But I do have questions -

1. For the NHL, where does that 2.9 billion number come from? Is that ticket sales + merch + licensing + TV rev?

2. Same question from the MLS number. Looks like only licensing according to that link.

You need to find a chart that compares them equally.

Revenue is revenue and a much better barometer of popularity than simply quoting attendance figures. Revenue includes attendance and everything else.

Ticket sales...TV and radio rights...sponsorship...and a bunch of other things to into overall revenue.

That is an incredible gap between the NHL and MLS...I had no idea it was that large.

It looks like whoever said the MLS is giving away a lot of freebies is right. There must be very little TV revenue in the MLS. Hopefully the MLS is at least poised to stay afloat.
