MLB 2013 Season

Maybe just bragging rights, which apparently is important to some...

In Hockey the Red Wings use to get the Presidents trophy regularly, but didn't amount to anything unless you played in the finals.

If they won the Best record, they would invariably lose in the first or second round.

What do you get for having the better record on August 23rd?

Something to discuss, like everything that is posted in this thread. Why do you ask?

Just pointing out things like many other things that get mentioned. We can ask the same question of just about every post at this point.

When a team goes from last place, 9.5 games out, to the second best record in baseball at any point of a season, you don't think that is worthy of a discussion or mention?

Two teams that usually work the count and play long games just played one of the quickest games of the year, a little over 2 hours long.

Both Lakey and Nolasco pitched good games. Lakey actually pitched better. He just made that one mistake to Hanley, the only runs scored in the game.

From earlier in this thread:

...the Dodgers...Tied it on an A-Gon double...

...which had immediately followed a Nick Punto double. Why can't the Red Sox get guys like that?

...And this afternoon:

First inning : Punto singled, Gonzalez homered LA 2, TB 0
Third inning: Punto doubled home Crawford, who had doubled, and someone else who had walked. LA 4, TB 0.

Why can't we get guys like that?

And now:

...He just made that one mistake to Hanley, the only runs scored in the game...

Hanley, of course, was traded away by the Red Sox for Josh Beckett. And the baserunner driven in by that homer was former Red Sox player Carl Crawford.

Why can't we get guys like that?

I don't recall seeing discussions about "better records" back in May, June, and July, that's all.

Not really. Looking back in this thread I see some topics that are timely and relevant, like Braun, Dodgers, Ichiro, Dodgers, Scully, Dodgers, Dempster, etc.

A mention?? Yes.

IMO this is timely and relevant.

Its discussed on sports stations and I am discussing it here. If you want to discuss, then feel free to chime in. If not, then don't. It's as simple as that.

Yep. There are a lot of ex Sox players on the Dodgers, including the back up catcher who started last night, Tim Federowicz.

 That's what I have been doing...discussing the relevance of discussing "better records" on August 23rd....

The trade was actually Hanley and Anibal Sanchez for Beckett and Mike Lowell. It was a trade that benefitted both teams, but there's no way the Sox win the '07 World Series without Beckett and Lowell.

While looking for something else, I just stumbled across an analysis of Puig's hitting made back when he was at .430 something, and as I guess most of you know, there are now people who are not gainfully employed like we are who keep track of and analyze all kinds of minutae, and it seems that somewhere there is a data base that separates balls hit hard, medium and soft, as well as hit in the air and on the ground and establishes norms for them falling in for hits, and in an analysis of the balls Puig had hit to that point, it was calculated that his assortment of hits of the baseball should have resulted in a batting average in the .280s. That reminds me of Ted Cox, who I know Bill1984 remembers, who got six hits in his first six at-bats, but only two of them were solid. Absolutely no one got worked up over that record setting start, but if he did that today, he'd have been hyped ad nauseum. I'd take Puig under the terms of his present contract in a second, but I'd be no more willing to give him a Carl Crawford contract right now than I would be to give one to ...Cark Crawford.

Ha ha. Funny man.

I would like to discuss the fact that Cabrera on August 23rd is leading MLB in many offensive categories. Why? Because even on August 23rd getting close to the second consecutive triple crown is worthy of discussion IMO.

If you want to focus on the the Red Herring "3/4 year award, then you are the one dragging this into a direction not worthy of discussion.

Having the 2nd best record on August 23 after having one of the worst records on June 23 is very worthy of discussion.

Good point. At least the Triple Crown is a real, tangible achievement that is actually recognized. Not sure if he can catch Davis' HR lead, but he's got a shot...

Why was Victorino batting right handed vs right handed pitchers yesterday?

ETA: Just found out that he has given up switch hitting.
