MLB 2013 Season

Dodgers are losing and still managed to get their magic number to 4.

If I were a Dodger fan I would be mightily concerned about Clayton. He is nowhere near World Series caliber right now. He is going bad at the wrong time.

Wow! A Red Sox/Yankees game that took less than three hours. In fact, less than two hours and fifty minutes.

The Red Sox say they have not decided whether they will pick up Lester's $13 million option. Riiiiight.

The only way the Dodgers can now clinch at home is if they win the next two games against SF and the DBack lose the next two games against CO. Just one loss by the Dodgers or one win by AZ will mean the Dodgers will be clinching on the road.

Whats the chances that Clayton is injured and not saying anything ?

We thought that might have been the issue with J.V. earlier in the year too. (there has been no word of such though)

Dodgers great run was simply due to the team getting healthy and making trades or bringing up players to replace those still out.

No Hanley, no Kemp, no Crawford, no Greinke, no Billingsley, no Beckett, and other key players out is why they got off to a bad start. Getting them healthy or replacing them with others is the reason why they improved greatly.

Now those same injuries are hurting them again. Ethier and Hanley are now out.

I don't think he is injured because he is still pitching with the same velocity. He just is not hitting his spots and he is throwing his big overhand breaking ball too much.

Hanley is supposedly back next week. What about Andre? This could be considered a rest for them before the playoffs.

I have not updates on Ethier. The key is to make sure they are healthy before the playoffs. This is why Mattingly has been resting all of his players at least twice a week for the last few weeks.

It is more important to have a healthy playoff team than to have the best record. Beside, the best record may not ideal anyway. One of three teams will be the WC and one of the others will be a division winner. The Dodgers could play the Reds, for example, in the first round or second round regardless if they have the best record or second best record. Is there really a difference between playing the Reds as the WC winner or the Reds as a division winner in the first round? If the Dodgers get the best record and the Reds are the WC, they will meet in the first round. If they have the second best record and the Reds win the divisions, they will still play in the first round. What is the difference? The same situation with the Pirates or Cards.

The only advantage to having the best record is you will be guaranteed home-field advantage in the second round, if you go.

Dodger game is over before it started. They will not be clinching at home now.

I'm going to call the Giants the bloop mob. This is the second game in a row where they scored three runs in one inning without hitting the ball hard at all (except for Pegans double).

If the Dodgers had a center fielder, the Giants wouldn't have scored at all. Pegans double should have been caught as well as Pences bloop single (Puig was playing way too deep).

Injuries really come into play when players are playing out of position. Puig is forced to play CF, and in 1 1/3 innings he not only messed up three plays, costing 3 outs, but also contributing to all 4 of the 5 Giant runs so far. None of those runs would have scored with a real center fielder in center field.

The MLB competition committee just voted to implement the Mercy Rule and call off the Dodgers Giants game after the end of the eighth inning.

You did seem to think it was pretty important about three weeks ago. ;)

HFA is huge in baseball, plus the second best record will get you HFA in the first round....

You play who you play when you play them in the postseason. Why not play them with HFA??

To me, that's worth shooting for. I can see resting guys down the stretch who are dinged up, but to rest guys just because could end up backfiring on you in the end.

No. You questioned why Mattingly was resting his players and I gave the same answer I gave now.

Actually it is not as important in baseball compared to other sports.

In the forty league championship series that have been played, only twenty-three teams that earned the HFA with their record actually had it in the LCS. Furthermore, only fourteen league champions had the best regular season record, with those teams compiling a collective 23-5 record in home playoff games. On the other hand, the remaining nine who had the best regular season but lost their LCS were a poor 4-15 at home in the playoffs.

61% of those with HFA win the league championship series. Yes, that is an advantage, but the advantage is more due to the fact that they are a better team most often (which is why they have a better record) more so than simply having HFA.
You play who you play when you play them in the postseason. Why not play them with HFA??
Because it has been statistically shown to not make a difference. It is better to have a healthy team that is more capable of winning than a hurt team with a better record.

Rest them to prevent them from getting dinged up. This team has been dinged up most of the year and more than any other team in baseball. If they weren't so dinged up then he probably wouldn't be doing this.
