MLB 2011 Season

Are you sure about that?? The Red Sox just played the Angels in a four-game series and avoided having to face him....

The Angels have played 23 games so far this season.

23 games divided by 4 man rotations = 5.75 games per pitcher. Weave would have to pitch on a 4 game rotation (technically less than a 4 game rotation) in order to get in 6 wins in just 23 games.

Early on in the season, many top pitchers pitch every fourth game, because of built-in days off. CC Sabathia is one that comes to mind. But, even then there are still at least 4 days of rest in-between each start. Here are Weaver's stats from this year so far:

Code:

I don't remember which player I looked this up for, but a few days ago, when I saw that some starting pitcher had seemingly "too many" decisions, I checked his game log and discovered that he had pitched in relief in the 14th inning of a game in which the bullpen had been depleted, and got the win.

It was common for starting pitchers to make themselves available for relief work in the 1970s. I see that Jim Palmer had 37 starts and one save in 1973 and 38 starts and one save in 1975. He also had 32 starts and 4 relief appearances in 1982. Dave McNally had 37 starts and 2 relief appearances in 1974.

Former Red Sox pitchers Roger Moret, Reggie Cleveland and Bob Stanley used to get a lot of decisions......and they were all (for the most part) swingmen.

For a guy that plays in the #2 market, he doesn't get enough attention. Ethier is very good player!
The dude is one of the best players currently playing. Last year his injury knocked him out of the MVP running.

With that said, he will not be a Dodger for long. Dodgers have a way of getting rid of their star players: Konerko, Piazza, Pedro Martinez, Werth, ex

So, I guess you would put an asterisk next to Ethier's accomplishment too??
Sure...Why not?

Besides, his accomplishment means nothing. Even hitting in 40+ games in a row is a great accomplishment but it means nothing until you reach 56 (something that will never be done)

Just think, youn get all the way to 40 straight games with a hit, a GREAT accomplishment, and you look up and realize you have to do it for another 16 games. :D

That's an interesting take since it's a record for the month of April...

Which shows you why it will never be broken.

Even DeMaggio playing today would not hit in 56 straight games as the game has changed to a game of specialists. DeMaggio would have to be familiar with pitchers and specialty pitchers that are good at getting him out.

The closest anyone got in recent times was Pete Rose back in 1978, and he only got to 45 (#3 all time). After that was Rollins with 38 expanding 2 different seasons (#8 all time). Everything in between was before DeMaggio's time

I thought Rose was 44 ?
Who and how many was number 2 ?
IIRC, Rose's was against the Braves, when Gardner refuse to give Rose anything close to the plate to hit.
Last at bat he threw everything outside and away.
What a coward.

I'm not asking or him to deliver one over the plate, but the same zip code would have been nice.

edit: I found it, it was Willie Keeler with 44, the record book shows 44,45, not sure how or why, is it 44 or 45 ?

Rose tied "Wee" Willie Keeler at 44. I do agree that the 56 game game hitting streak will never be broken.

It's funny; things like this didn't seem to happen when Bobby Cox was in charge....

Braves pitcher Derek Lowe was arrested in Atlanta on suspicion of drunken driving Thursday night.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper stopped Lowe, 37, after he was spotted racing another car, GSP spokesman Gordy Wright said. Wright said the trooper smelled an alcoholic drink in his car.

The Atlanta Braves have placed pitching coach Roger McDowell on administrative leave pending their investigation into homophobic comments and crude gestures he made toward fans before a game in San Francisco last weekend.
