SEC teams contend that their conference schedules are tough enough that they don't really need to schedule marquis out-of-conference matchups. For the most part, I can understand that point of view....
It's the fans that say this. If you look at the conference as a whole, you will see where the SEC schedules as many big games out of conference as anyone else.
PS: Most early 2008 previews have the Buckeyes ranked in the top 5.
I had no doubt that Ohio State would be ranked this high preseason - in fact, it was in one of my previous posts. The reason for this is it's all about wins and losses, and right now the powers that be see the Big10 as a weak conference, with only two teams of any significance. With a full schedule of Big10 opponents, chances are good that OSU makes it through the conference unscathed, especially playing UM at home. Playing USC gives their schedule some credibility (enough to get a nod in the polls anyway), and by playing USC early in the season there is a chance of beating them (USC seems to stumble early these days), or coming back from an early loss.
