Just getting started what can I get with this?

Put an add on Craigslist because could not get anything with Dish500 with universal Lnbf GS ESX521and a cheap X2-fta Mini Digital Receiver.

So for $25 I got this. What do you think. The lnb thats on there probably unusable. Can it be used with Ku or are the holes to big and whats a good low cost Lnb can try or is it possible to mount my lnb on this dish and how. Lastly on this receiver tried to get AMC 9 on the Dish 500 but don't know if setting up the receiver correct it has single setting with 1 way to set lnb and set to 10750; universal with lnb ty 1 and lnb ty 2 set them both at 10750. I tried to look on this awesome web site for some help as this is my first time but I need help. Thanks

lnb is not in that picture she gone see the nuts & bolts that's where the lnb should be
but you should be able to get cband and ku with it

The replacement LNB will likely have a LO frequency setting of 5150mhz.

Personally, I would replace the feedhorn/servo with a C-band LNBF so your receiver could control the polarity.

First you will need to get the dish mounted on a stable pole and set it for your latitude. Did it come with an actuator (to move the dish side to site)? Be careful not to bend the dish it looks kind of flimsy but would be light to handle and install. Madmadworld's last option is likely your best bet, I have one and it works very well for the price, and allows you to use two satellite receivers independantly from the one LNBF. Great place to start. Easy to set up especially if you don't have a receiver that runs the little motor on the old feedhorn (adjusts your antenna polarity alignment to the satellite's antenna, also known as "skew").

the feed horn looks like it will slide right off the scalar ring.try not to disturb as much as possible. mark anything you move (the black piece holding the feed horn)

I think the dish is what is called perforated the holes are prety small but don’t think matters to much. It was kind of a bear to get from where I bought it vines and such then hauling it trying not to bend it . Everyone was looking at us. My brother and sister helped me 17 and 15 they said it looked like we were hunting ufo. Lol
It did come with the Hydraulic cylinder on the back but no remote would have to figure out a way to control it.

At first was the history channel but from what I read thats off FTA; then I found Tuff.tv on AMC 9 wich looks like a good channel I am going to try that.

Do you have a DVB receiver Redhawk? If so you should be up and running fairly quickly.

The hydraulic part you mentioned is likely electric, should have a motor at the end away from the satellite mounting swivel. You can check it with a 12vdc source, just make sure you are powering the motor and not the position indicator switch/sensor inside; remove the cover and check the wires and make sure that you know which ones are the motor power. If you power up the switch it would likely burn out and need replacing to get the positioner to work properly again.

I have actually thought of using a hydraulic ram and electric/hydraulic valve for positioning my big dish but getting a feedback mechanism to work (to determine position) would be difficult... The electric actuator is just so much simpler!

Nice perf dish. Agree with previous posts, an LNBF will work a lot better than a new LNB bolted to the feedhorn.
With a lnbf your receiver can switch polarity, electrically. No need for another piece of equipment to operate the servo(mechanical polarity control - that blue plastic 'box' on the back of it with the 3 small wires)
When 'planting' a pole for ithe BUD to 'hang out' on, make sure that the bottom of the hole is below your frost line. Otherwise it will move and throw the dish off the arc.

Enter a few transponders (Info in TheList - link on top of all pages) www.dishpointer.com will show your 'aim point'.
When aiming, make small adjustments to the dish, and wait 10 sec or so. It may take that long for the receiver to 'lock on' a weak signal.

Not hydraulic its electric. And the receiver is a low cost x2 m1 the least expensive one i could buy to get started. I bought before got the BUD. I dont think can track with this receiver. To be honest my location sucks for this but if i have to can do more landscaping as i burn it to heat the house. Does any one think i can get anything there that is the view to AMC9.

Put your location in www.dishpointer.com Zoom into your yard/ dish position. Select AMC 9 satellite. Will tell you the satellite elevation. That's the angle above the horizon it is. Go out and look up at that angle in line with the line also painted on the page.

If those wires are still connected to the motor, look for the 2 bigger guage wires, they carry the power to move the motor. As stated already, don't connect the smaller wires yet, they go to the position sensor (feedback info to older receivers to determine the motor's position) . Did you get a pole with the dish?

Sorry no updates was is in Denver coaching, I just re read all the reply's to my posts to make sure did not re ask stupid questions as i see so many people do when I am researching a topic. I did not get the original pole and am going to try and use a old basketball pole off one of them plastic stand up hoops. I believe I have made up my mind to get the C band ESX241 as recommended by madmadworld I just want to see one program show up even if in another language. The weather here in WI is terrible right now so have not got BUD planted yet and still need to decide were wanted to put it. Before I reg for this site and was trying to figure out this new hobby myself I have been using SatFinder android app and dishpointer.com to point the Dish500 I was playing with to no avail that's why I got the bigger dish and reg here. Can I plant the bud 3 to 400 yards away with this little receiver I have and I probably would use RG-11 cable. As you can see by earlier picture my biggest problem I think is line of site.

As far as the actuator still have not tested. Could i just get one of dish positioner's off ebay instead of getting dif receiver for now if the actuator work. My receiver again is the inexpensive Dvb-s only X2\.

The basketball post is thin wall and will certainly collapse when the mount bolts are tightened. Also pretty sure the windload will bend the thinwall post with a medium gust.

Go with schedule 40 pipe or equivalent.

You can drive the motor east/west using a small 12vdc motorcycle battery or charger until you get a G or V-Box controller.

Lizard opinion:

Your BUD bears a strong resemblance to several I've seen, all with different mounts.
(See the perf in my signature for an example, and possibly Birdview Perf, too!)
If you didn't bend the hell out of it, it should be very good on C band.
I would not invest time nor money getting Ku on it 'till we know more about the damage.
Install a C only LNBF, as recommended above.

Yes, it needs a 3.5" OD PIPE for mounting.
That is used by maybe 90% of the BUDs you'll ever find, so it's a good general investment.


As for using a Dish 500 with a proper LNBF, that's a project for an an advanced dish nut, not a beginner, and the results will never be tremendous.
By all means get a bigger dish. Preferably one designed to take an FTA LNBF.
I normally recommend a nice 36" (90 cm) for newbies.
If you FIND a 30" dish, try it, but if you are BUYing, don't spend serious money on less than 36".!
