It's Official - iPhone on Verizon Wireless

Diogen CEO gets hit by a bus? Now you're beginning to sound like Bob Haller. :D

But I do agree that technology is secondary. Not that it is debatable but rather just a good prudent decision to mesh the proper technology with the switch / growth transition from present 3G to LTE over the next several years. Verizon has already stated CDMA will not be obsolete until about 2017, so there will be a number of phones in use with a combo of LTE and 3G CDMA/EVDO. What I question is how many people who want iphone on Verizon will hold out for the LTE version, assumed slated for June 2011. I think I will hold off for about 4th qtr 2011 before getting one for my wife. As I said before, I have no interest in iphone due to the closed system it uses.

Geeez, am I really that bad at communicating the idea?

OK, not a bus, he f***s his intern instead of his wife and follows Hurds fate, how about that?

The point is: it should be easy and cheap to re-purpose a handset to a different market.
Because people get replaced for gazillion reasons and different people have different ideas.

Here is my bet:
Apple will do something to its CDMA handset that will make it easy to sell to a market other than covered by Verizon.
Even if this means an GSM and CDMA handset all in one.

And if this can not be done then there will not be a Verizon iPhone...

Diogen.

My contract is up next June with AT&T. If AT&T has not made progress in my area (They put out a presser every 1st q. how they are making progress, I just don't see it in my area) I will jump in a heartbeat. One thing could hold me back if Verizon throws out the unlimited data plan. Rumors are they will but if AT&T takes away the grandfathered subs to a data cap, it will be a wash and I will bolt.

AT&T is currently investing billions in wireless network upgrades and have been doing it for more than a year.

Well hopefully that fixes the issue of when I cross into the other states that I visit of having to use the edge network. If not, then When/If they get the Iphone, AT&T will be a memory.

The WSJ also points out that the iPhone on VZ will be a slower experience since AT&T's 3G is faster. But, of course VZ has wider area coverage of 3G and VZ 3G beats AT&T edge network.

Also VZ 3G technology does not support surfing the web while talking on the phone at the same time.

It is a pay site: Verizon iPhone—There's a Catch - WSJ.com

Most notably, Verizon customers aren't able to surf the Web or exchange email while they're talking on their phone. That sort of on-the-go multitasking—which AT&T and iPhone maker Apple Inc. have touted in advertising—might seem a little much to many people, but it's often what iPhone users are signing up for.

Verizon Wireless is working on providing that capability, said Verizon executive Brian Higgins. He wouldn't say when it will be ready, but played down the need for handling voice and data at the same time.

I think this is the first sign of this very scenario playing out
Apple Developing CDMA-GSM ‘World iPad’? | John Paczkowski | Digital Daily | AllThingsD
At the moment, only for the Ipad. But most likely for the next "world" iPhone as well.

There will probably be a minor design update: antennagate, micro-SIM, CDMA+GSM radio, etc.

I hope Apple never builds an iPad absent the wifi transceiver. I don't mind at all not having a carrier to pay each month. Tethering works for me. Of course, if I traveled all the time with it I may change my mind.

This is all based on a CIO article
When Is the Verizon iPhone Coming? | CIO - Blogs and Discussion
which in turn shares it revelation based on a market researcher claiming
Market researcher Asymco released a damning report earlier this week showing all of Verizon's major smartphones (RIM, HTC, Motorola, Palm, LG and Samsung) sliding since August.
Not really sure how much this has to do with reality. Looks more like a slow no-news investment week...

Verizon iPhone Stocking Up: Tech Edge - TheStreet

See ya in Jan folks.

I'd bet money that it was a mod who is a fanboy of the Android stuff. :)

The rumor reported by MacDailyNews, attributed to one source, also asserts that the Verizon iPhone will be a 4G device. Instead of being just a 3G CDMA device, Apple and Verizon presumably have made the iPhone long-term evolution or LTE ready.

This is interesting. When I was in the Verizon store last week buying an ipad for my wife, we spoke of the timing to get updated to the iphone. The sales guy asked if I am going to upgrade to the new iphone next month. I didn't act surprised but said my wife wants one but I think we will be waiting until the iphone 4G LTE is out. He just said you seem to be pretty well informed about 4G. Then he said you shouldn't need to wait very long but all I can tell you is that we don't have any other phones for 4G coming in yet. I then said I am quite worried that Verizon won't be able to handle the bandwidth of a rapid growth in iphone population on their network. He then said we think LTE will be the answer to that so you shouldn't be worrying. The entire conversation was in a mood of fait accompli so I think it is about time AT&T / Apple fanboys face the music. My bets are on Verizon. I'm buying in heavy next week! I'm already heavy on Apple but you all knew that.

It was interesting we spoke of this in the context of a fait acompli. That was for the actual sales of iphone but the LTE version I was thinking it won't be offered until iphone 5 in June. ( intime for the delivery of those Qualcomm chips. Now I'm not so sure we will need to wait. Doesn't matter because I'm not up for a new phone until July anyway.

Edit- I agree with the author's February prediction. That makes it work for the 30 day return policy he mentioned and also gives time for the CES and Apple ad campaigns to pre date the release. Apple likes to hype those long lines at the stores. Look for it at CES first.

I am sorry but I don't consider the sales rep at a Verizon store to be much of a source. When an announcement by Apple or verizon (not a sales rep but the companies) I will listen.

I am thinking Stuart did, but I could be wrong. I know I didn't.

I suspect it is coming, but Don talking to his Verizon rep at a local store as a definitive source is like walking into Best Buy and asking one of my college student workers there for when the next great product is coming out. :)

How come we always see photos taken of the VZW system software on numerous tech sites, showing us when such and such phone has entered inventory, or when it is slated for EOL, but nothing whatsoever on the iPhone? Of course, there could be some St. Jobs magic going on. ;)

Agreed. This has been rumored so many times that I'm not going to believe it until you can actually purchase the phone from Verizon and activate it. The news media has been using the Bob Haller approach - make the prediction frequently and over a long period and you're bound to be right eventually.

Why all the hubbub about Verizon and the iPhone? Who cares!? Verizon seems to be doing just fine without the most overrated piece of electronics ever to come out. I still don’t understand why the media continues to insist the iPhone is something so special and great, when it is far from that, when consumers have been eating up Android for the past year. If you like being controlled by an egotistical, anal retentive control freak, yes the iPhone is great for you. But for the rest of us Android is great.

It is probably not really going to benefit VZ as much as Apple. Apple is limiting their market share in the US by the carrier limitation. As you pointed out, VZ has a variety of competing smartphones that fill in for the iphone. The current rumor is that AT&T and VZ may pay Apple big bucks to limit the iPhone to just the 2 carriers (i.e. sprint/tmobile did not want to pay the big bucks Apple demands).
